Book Description

October 14, 2008
Clothing and accessories with style and flair for young women to knit and wear.

Maybe you’ve already mastered scarves and are bored with them, or maybe you’ve never knitted before but are drawn to the trendy knitted fashions you’re seeing on the runways and in your favorite stores. If all the knitting books you’ve picked up seem like they’re written for the likes of your Great Aunt Mabel rather than for you and your hipper crowd, It Girl Knits is your new best friend—and fashion consultant.

Created by 16-year-old “It Girl” Phoenix Bess, the 30 projects presented here were all designed with a youthful philosophy—and are pieces that Bess actually wears. A Baby Doll Top, Shortie Jacket, Fingerless Gloves, Beaded Bandana, Capri Leggings, Gold Halter Top, Tiny Shorts—all are easy to knit but make big statements. Every project adheres to the Bess design principles: the use of fibers that create a great fit and are soft to the touch (like bamboo, silk, and cotton yarns), and clean, classic lines with an edgy twist (often via fun embellishments like beads, crystals, and felt).

Most of the patterns are for beginners and knitted in the round (so less tough stuff like purling, seaming, and finishing), and include instructions for adjusting hemlines, inseams, and waistlines to get the perfect fit for any body type. Divided into four chapters—Working, Relaxing, Recreating, and Celebrating—It Girl Knits even features a color chart to help you mix and match yarns (i.e., Lavender + Baby Pink = cuteness), and sidebars on how to add optional designer details and put together an outfit that best shows off your newly-knitted treasure.

Whether you’re hanging out at a café with friends, going to the beach, or dancing the night away, you’ll find a cool piece to knit that is sure to make you the “It Girl” of the day or night.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School—Bess, a 16-year-old entrepreneur, includes 30 of her favorite, easiest patterns and, for each one, tips on how to wear the item and how to accessorize it. Divided into four sections—"Sunny Days," "Days Off," "Play Days," and "Nights"—the book offers a full array of fashionable items from tank tops to purses and headbands to pencil skirts. Back matter lists products to purchase and the author's favorite merchandisers. The simplicity of the patterns, helpful hints, detailed glossary, and beautiful color photographs displaying each item on a teen model, as well as the fact that Knits was written by a teen, make it a good fit for both beginning and intermediate knitters.—Sarah Krygier, Solano County Library, Fairfield, CA

Review

"A book on the way, a burgeoning pattern line, a Ravelry shop, a nascent ready-wear accessories collection, mainstream media attention. It's enough to tax the equilibrium of a grizzled design vet. That Phoenix Bess is adroitly balancing the many facets of her growing brand at the tricky age of 15 is testament to her own maturity…teens tweens, and grown women alike are drawn to her garments-feminine shrugs and sweaters, accessories embellished with jewels and hardware…all infused with a touch of drama that references Phoenix's other passions, for acting and dancing."

This review is from: It Girl Knits: 30 Fresh Styles for the Young and Fabulous (Paperback)
This is book is full of easy beginner tank top pats,a bikini pat, 2 dresses, empire waist tank top that criss crosses in the front, 2 felted bags, a lace hat,Skirts, capri's, new and different type of tanks. See the photos that have been uploaded and you will see the patterns. I don't buy books unless I see the inside and now you can do the same. These are the first tank tops I have ever tried and they are EASY!

Nice patterns, none too difficult. Not just for teens, but my teen daughter is now interested in re-learning to knit after looking through the book. My biggest complaint would have to be that the patterns are very yarn-specific without allowing for substitution; I tend to be a stash knitter and don't want to have to purchase new yarns to create these items. It's not just a question of matching gauge, but also the drape of the fabric which can vary greatly by fiber type)

All in all, though - it's nice book and I'm happy to own it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing designs by a teenager with style, September 21, 2009
By
This review is from: It Girl Knits: 30 Fresh Styles for the Young and Fabulous (Paperback)
Fifteen year old Phoenix Bess, a homeschooler with a background in theater and clothing design has produced this book filled with elegant, simple and variety in knitted garments. Designs include sweaters, leggings, pants, tops, bags, skirts and even bathing suits. Although many designs are quite easy, a good working knowledge of knitting techniques and pattern reading are necessary to complete most of these projects. The photography shows off each design with clarity, and the schematics included with each pattern's written instructions add to the written instructions. Although the patterns have a decidedly youthful feel to them, many will appeal to older knitters as well, or will make great gift knitting for teenagers as recipients.
