Book Description

A Girl Like You (A Donovan Creed Novel) is the next step in the evolution of hit man and former CIA assassin, Donovan Creed.

When Rachel Case goes to the doctor for a routine blood test, scientists are astonished to learn she possesses a gene no one else on earth seems to have—a gene that holds the key to protecting the world from the deadliest pandemic in history. When government operatives kidnap Rachel in order to develop a vaccine, her lover, Donovan Creed, realizes the only way he can find Rachel is to enlist the help of her current husband, Sam.

A Girl Like You is “A sure-fire hit!” Another laugh-out-loud thriller in the tradition of Saving Rachel and Wish List.

Every ten seconds, twenty-four hours a day, a John Locke novel is downloaded somewhere in the world! Authors, book reviewers, bloggers, newspaper and radio interviewers, and fans across the globe agree: John Locke is one of the most creative contemporary talents in America today.

Locke reminds me of a cross between Jim Thompson and Carl Hiaasen.' Mike Shatzkin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic John Locke! March 4, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
John Locke has a very infectious writing style. He does not disappoint with "A Girl Like You". There's plenty of action, mystery, and of course, an adult-dose of humor.

John's books are best enjoyed with an open mind and willingness to let the author take you where he intends. Do this and I promise you will become a fan. I would strongly suggest you read his books in order, and hey, at 99¢ buy them all, then settle in for some fun!

I finished "A Girl Like You" in one sitting; something I never do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Saving Rachel Part Deux March 9, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Too bad Charlie Sheen's gone off the deep end, because he'd be the guy to play Donovan Creed: just the right amount of comic intensity, overt sexuality and sheer lunacy to pull it off.

When Rachel gets snatched from her protected penthouse by government agents, Creed has no choice but to enlist Rachel's cuckolded husband/savant Sam Case to try to save her--again. Think wacky water moccasin high jinx.

It's nice to see Creed back on center-stage after the past couple of books, doing what he does best: scaring the crap out of people.

I have no idea how long this book is. I read it in a couple hours. Locke crams so much action into a few pages, one hardly feels cheated. At times, the comic dialogue seems a bit forced, however.

A GIRL LIKE YOU suggests that Creed will soon be out fighting terrorists. I look forward to that. Four and a half stars for this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars John Locke is a Genius March 25, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
But not a literary genius. He has somehow managed to market a series of really crappy books to the top of Amazon's Kindle best seller list by selling them for $0.99. At that price you might read one and not consider it a tragic waste of money (although it certainly is a tragic waste of time). Of course this is the only of Locke's books that I've read or plan to read, but I think it's safe to assume that the rest of them are just a bad. There's something resembling a plot about the kidnapping of an ex-super-spy's girlfriend for her genetic link to the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918, but mostly involves this spy tormenting and torturing various people on his way to finding her. Not that you would ever care about the spy, his girlfriend or the people he torments along the way, since none of these characters has the depth to generate any sort of sympathy. The dialogue is beyond laughable. To be generous, the character names are somewhat whimsical (either that or demonstrate a serious lack of originality) and the book reads fast. It's just not fast enough.

As I was reading the long comments section in J.A. Korvath's blog interview with Mr. Locke, Mr. Locke listed the chronological order of his Donovan Creed books. Lo and behold there was a new novel: "A Girl Like You". As fast as I could I hit that link to Amazon and bought that sucker as fast as I could. I walked a block to the nearest WiFi hotspot and it was on my Kindle.

It was so nice to welcome back Mr. Creed that I read the first third of this book during lunch and devoured the rest that evening. Talk about getting your money's worth! Mr. Locke is now on my top 5 best *living* writers list (replacing the late Robert B. Parker). What a wonderful new author discovery. I haven't felt this way about a new author since Lee Child.

Speaking of Mr. Parker, Mr. Locke's style reminds me very much of his. Take the breezy confidence and humor of Spenser, add some toughness and intelligence of Jack Reacher and the zaniness of Stephanie Plumb and you have Donovan Creed.

I wholly recommend this book. Go out and get his other books too. You won't be disappointed and you'll have enough money left over a few beers to drink while you read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Puerile glurge March 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Thankfully I only paid $.99 for this bit of trash. While it wasn't the worst book I've ever read, it came close. Combine ridiculous plot with cartoon characters and sophomoric dialog, and you've got a John Locke novel, it seems. These superhero protagonists seem to be more popular these days, and here we have someone who is "extraordinarily handsome", a former CIA agent, expert assassin with superhuman skills, a multi-billionaire, a sexual dynamo, etc., who only hangs out with spectacularly gorgeous women who are deadly in their own right. We're also treated to a misogynistic passage concerning a fairly unattractive woman. Locke attributes physical attributes and dialog to her that serve no plot purpose other than to demean her as not being one of the "beautiful" people in this crapfest.

While I'm sure Mr. Locke is making money from these books, none of it will be mine in the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars An okay follow-up to Saving Rachel March 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
More unexpected plot twists from Donovan Creed, but not as fun or unpredictable as in Saving Rachel. We revisit characters Donovan, Sam, Rachel, Lou & Callie. It's an okay follow-up but I wouldn't recommend this as an introduction to Donovan Creed. I appreciated that the language was toned down in this book. It's worth the buck to read the continuing story if you like reading series books.
