4.0 out of 5 stars PLEASE REISSUE FAMILY & VANITY 6 on CD NOW!!
Most Prince fans already have this stuff elsewhere, but I must say, teasing us with only ONE track from THE FAMILY and ONE track from VANITY 6 is just that...a tease! I don't understand why Warner Bros. is unwilling to reissue both the full-length THE FAMILY and VANITY 6 self-titled LPs on CD?! If you look on ebay, these CDs routinely go for over $100 EACH on ebay...

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Soundtrack
Girl 6 is the soundtrack to Spike Lee's worst movie about a phone sex service. The soundtrack garnered more attention at the time of it's release for the fact that Prince allowed it to be credited under the name of Prince and not that crazy symbol he insisted he be referred to by. The album contains mostly older material with his work with the Revolution ("Girls...

I don't understand why Warner Bros. is unwilling to reissue both the full-length THE FAMILY and VANITY 6 self-titled LPs on CD?! If you look on ebay, these CDs routinely go for over $100 EACH on ebay! Hello? There is a HUGE Prince fanbase out there who would snap of these full-length CDs, long overdue - first THE FAMILY: tracks like the ORIGINAL "NOTHING COMPARES 2 U" "RIVER RUN DRY" adn others are all sublime. As for VANITY 6, it's a nearly perfect and too short LP - BITE THE BEAT, MAKE-UP, NASTY GIRL, IF A GIRL ANSWERS, etc. were all ground-breakers back in the day - and inadvertedly influenced a new wave of 80s electro-funk today - FELIX DA HOUSECAt, do you feel me?! While you're at it, why not reissue VANITY's solo MOTOWN LP "WILD ANIMAL" on CD? So much cr*p is released on CD nowadays, but not these gems? Sad.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Few Tracks MATTER!!, September 22, 2003
This soundtrack is basically a "Sign o' The Times"-era Prince
sampler with a little throwaway new material added but it must be
given props for the stunning "She Spoke 2 Me",a funky blues/rock
number that ranks with "the artists" best mid 90's work. And you
can't get the Family's excellent 1985 hit "The Screams Of Passion" or 1982's "Nasty Girl" by the Vanity 6 anywhere else right no (a pity because I have both artists full lengh LP's on
vinyl and both deserve emmediate reissue!).But aside from those
three tracks whitch EARN this set three of it's stars the rest
of the albeit stunning material can be found on Prince albums
worth hearing in their entirety.

4.0 out of 5 stars A FINE PRINCE COMPILATION, August 8, 2001

This Soundtrack compiles many Prince songs old and new and also includes tracks by other members of the Prince "family". This Soundtrack includes two hard to find tracks, one by Vanity and the other by The Family. Up until now these tracks have never been released in CD format. It's nice to hear them again. This soundtrack also includes new Prince songs as well. One track entitled "She Spoke 2 Me" is also available in long form on the Prince Archive CD entitled "The Vault:Old Friends For Sale" which brings out Prince's jazzy side. If you are a fan of Prince's music as much as I am then you'll definitely enjoy this CD. The movie was rather humorous as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A small collection of Prince related gems, May 21, 2000
Not the big hits, but by no means are the songs misses either. The soundtrack to the forgettable Girl 6 (which I might have slept trough) is full of gorgeous ballads and uptempo R&B faire. It is hard to mention all of the bright spots because even the weaker songs like "Girl 6" and "Count The Days" still have something slightly redeeming. The tracks aren't Prince only, but him with related groups like The Family and Vanity 6, whose great hard-to-find sex fest "Nasty Girl" is steamy and controversial, but Apollonia 6's "Sex Shooter" is a more demure Prince produced track and is bite size in comparison. The hot Prince tracks are "Spoke To Me", which forays into a jazz Burt Bachrach sound. Also awesome tracks are "Hot Thing" (a modern sounding rock James Brown type tune) , "Don't Talk 2 Strangers" (hear a sweet sounding rendition of it on Chaka Khan's "Come To My House") and of course the hot funk of "Erotic City".

The kind of disappointing thing about the soundtrack is that it has obviously lifted tracks from the "Hits" sets. I'm surprised it didn't take the live "Nothing Compares 2 U". It is an awesome mixed bag of Prince goodies, but not his essentials. Not to mention that some tracks sound below him. Still a fun and even surprisingly emotional set.

I must admit, I wasn't an "avid" Prince fan back in the day. But with age comes wisdom and there is no denying that Prince is a musical genius. He has nothing but respect from an array of music lovers regardless of race, age or gender.

I purchased this recently because I heard one of my favorite songs, Adore, on the radio and wanted to have it in my CD collection. It's such a sexy song. Like peanuts & potato chips, you just can't get enough of it. I can never play it just once!! And the words...whew!!

I didn't realize I was getting an all-around Great CD with some of Prince's (and the family's) best from back in the day! I can see why artist like Alicia Key's sees him as a mentor. They realize as an R&B performing artist...the importance of real music including playing musical instruments and actually studying music. All of this is evident in Prince...even to a lay person.

These songs are like poetry in motion. Sometimes I think Prince is a little "freaky-deaky" :-)
He's so creative in expressing what we may be thinking ourselves at times. Maybe that's another reason why I can enjoy & relate to it better now; as a mature adult.

This may be my first Prince purchase but definitely not the last.

Chris Rock said it good. Back in the day folks use to compare Prince to Michael Jackson. Well guess what?!?!?!

PRINCE WON!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nasty Girl, May 25, 2006

"Wake me when you're done. I guess you'll be the only one having fun." -Nasty Girl, Vanity 6

I bought Girl 6 for two reasons. One is Nasty Girl. The lyrics are raunchy but fun; and the funky music is dynamite. My favorite part is when Vanity says "Uhh! It's time to jam. Dance nasty girls! Dance! Everybody!" Don't tell me that when you hear I'm A Slave 4 U by Britney Spears, you don't hear Nasty Girl through and through.

I also bought the cd for the b/side songs like Erotic City and How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore. Erotic City is an excellent song, and to think it was a B/side! Some folks' A/sides aren't that good.

Some of the tracks are worth skipping, like Girl 6 and Girls and Boys and Hot Thing. I know Girls and Boys and Hot Thing are supposedly classic Prince songs in many circles, but I disliked them even when I heard them on their respective albums, Parade and Sign O' The Times.

Another standout is Count the Days, which is a vicious attack on an ex-lover. But there's also some lyrics about a church and curing the ills of the people, so who knows what the hell the song is really about. Keep in mind I never saw the MOVIE Girl 6 (and never intend to), so maybe the lyrics are alluding to events in the film.

Nevertheless...

A nice pick-up for earnest Prince fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Girl 6, September 11, 2005
If you enjoy good music, you'll love this album. From start to finish this is a great album! Everybody loves songs like "Nasty Girl" and "Erotic City" already, but you can also listen to the perfect "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore," and "Count the Days." A great addition to your Prince collection, or something to get it started.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adore...Need I say more?, August 7, 2000
By A Customer
As a strong admirer of a great genius of our time, I bought this CD with the intent of further solidifying my obsession with Prince. Adore, quite possibly one of the greatest songs ever made, makes this cd perfect. I definitely recommend it to anyone who ever doubted that Prince was not a real artist. Gimme a break. Nothing gets realer than Adore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prince and his revolution, June 23, 2009
Hated the movie but love the soundtrack. If you are a fan of Prince and some of the spin-off groups this CD is worth getting. The best cuts are the very hard to get "Screams of Passion" by the Family and the sexy "Erotic City" that still has folks trying to figure out the f-word that is used in the lyrics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hits and Rarities for Prince, January 18, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is an interesting - and underrated - soundtrack/collection in the vast Prince catalog. The 13 tracks clock in at 61:13, with some of the material dating back to 1982.

Released in March 1996 it follows a trend Prince set forth in the late-1980s for soundtrack projects; dig around the vault for unreleased songs and/or toss in a few previously-released, but re-edited, tracks. This could be titled, "hits and rarities."

There is material from Vanity 6 (the clubland classic, Nasty Girl), The Family (The Screams of Passion) and New Power Generation (newly written for the soundtrack and single, Girl 6, and Count the Days) to complement the offerings from Prince. Nasty Girl was also issued as a single nearly 15 years after it was a hit for Vanity 6 and the vibe remains amazingly fresh. As long as clubs have DJ's spinning the beat, Vanity 6 will be on the playlist for a new audience.

This is a neat retrospective into Prince's many projects and is as much a soundtrack on facets of his career as it is a solid soundtrack to the film that was directed by Spike Lee.
