From School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up-Supportive titles for teens struggling with being female as the new century dawns. Lound shares girls' comments as they relate the problems of growing up female in any family. She explores gender roles of today and yesterday while addressing expectations, biases, and relationships and offers lots of sound advice. Steiner does a good job of promoting female participation in any sport. She is quick to point out that simply participating in the sport for the love of the game is enough; girls should not feel pressure to reach Olympian heights or beat the boys. She discusses body image and mentors. Both texts flow well and the authors' decidedly post-feminist voices come through loud and clear. Bold sidebars highlight a comment or quote. Upbeat additions.-Elaine Baran Black, Gwinnett County Public Library, Lawrenceville, GA
