4.0 out of 5 stars A real curiosity !, February 1, 2004
This review is from: The Girl From Rio (DVD)
The plot of "The girl from Rio" is quite simple: Sumuru and her army of women want to exterminate the whole human male gender. Actions scenes are not the best moments of this movie. The interest is somewhere else. It's much more its weird and wild atmosphere, which will enjoy the Franco aficionados. It's difficult not to be fascinated by the world of Femina City, the lair of the female warriors. Shirley Eaton and Maria Rohm are simply amazing in all her sexy suits and there is also a wonderful song called of course "The girl from Rio". The final scene on the ship is a typical example for Franco's touch!
The quality of this DVD is in a good shape. As Bonus we have some interviews of Jess Franco, Harry Alan Towers and the very natural Shirley Eaton. A lot of posters and stills complete this DVD with of course a Jess Franco bio and some facts of Sumuru.
"The girl from Rio" is a real curiosity and I'm sure Franco friends will enjoy it. Blue Underground did again a fine job.

This review is from: The Girl From Rio (DVD)
James Bond style 60s softcore sci fi. Excellent if you like that kind of stuff. Movie about a race of women trying to take over the world. Done with Class.

3.0 out of 5 stars For Shirley Eaton fans only!, December 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Girl From Rio (DVD)
The Girl from Rio title suggests maybe an unearthed musical from the 1940's but naw, wrong guess. It is in fact the sequel to The Million Eyes of Su-Muru which also starred Shirley Eaton in the title role of Su-Muru or here as Sumitra the leader of a modern day army of women warriors bent on global domination. Picture an amalgam of Modesty Blaise & Secret Agent & you should start to clue in as to what this is. Richard Wyler is the man trying to crash Sumitra's party though it's a while before we know why. George Sanders on the DVD case is referred to as a crime boss though the movie shows him as essentially the Brazil based head of the British Secret Service ( if I got this right) though he seems more cash then mission driven. if you like people being chased captured, escaping being chased again captured & escaping this is your kind of film. Maria Rohm as well is featured & I believe apperared in Jess Franco's next film 99 Women. For me movie aside the special feature interviews with Shirley Eaton ( very brief) & Jess Franco ( more extended) were very interesting. I won't spoil it for you but suffice it to say that while shirley & Jess spoke well of each other, it appears neither the actor or the director were very happy with the finished product. In fact I believe Shirley Eaton went into semi retirement shortly after this movie & Jess inserted a double for Shirley in a provocative scene & didn't reveal it to her. If you're a big Shirley Eaton Fan watch it or into cult film, same thing applies. It is watchable but stretched out to far in some spots. As well it is the type of a film that tried to be kinky & sexy as well as a mainsteam spy flick & really wasn't either. 3 stars is as high as I can go based on the solid acting & sultry appeal of Shirley Eaton & Maria Rohm.
