Historical Fiction Or...,
By
This review is from: The Girl from Wish Lane (Hardcover)
... fact-short history-of-Dundee-meets -Barbara-Cartland?
The problem with this book is it was neither enough history of the jute mills of Dundee of the early twentieth century, nor a proper romance. If one is a romance novel reader--and I admittedly am not--the brief insertions of the dissatisfaction of the poor with their dreadful lot would have annoyed me. As a reader of historical fiction, which I am occaionally, the inclusion of the rather insipid romantic plot--wealthy mill owner's son falls for poor mill girl; reminiscent of the Montagues/Capulets, West Side Story, Love Story, etc.--was pesky. |
