Biography

Uncle Walt's Band was a group of three very talented young men who grew up in Spartanburg , SC . They are Walter Hyatt , Champ Hood and David Ball . 4.0 out of 5 stars Thankfully re-issued tracks, September 18, 2000
By A Customer

No other acoustic trio has quite the same blend of twang and swang as Uncle Walt's Band, who have been favorites of mine for 15 years. This compilation, licenced by Walter Hyatt to Sugar Hill records, contains some of the groups best moments on record. Walter gave Sugar hill enough material to fill this and a companion CD, taking tracks from the groups four albums which were self-released on Lespedeza records (Walter's first solo album also came out on this label). Unfortunately for the faithful, these compilations do not include any material not written by Walter, Champ and David. Though it is a minor miracle that these CDs exist at all, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someday, the group's wonderful debut LP, "Blame It on the Bossa Nova" (later issued as "Uncle Walt's Band"), will be issued in its entirety. It includes priceless versions of Little Sadie, From Four Until Late, Ruby It's You, Undecided, and a couple of others that aren't here. Ms. Hyatt and the small record labels of the world are you, listening? Please don't let these tracks and Walter's first album languish in an attic - the world needs them!

Uncle Walt's Band became a legend long before Walter Hyatt's and Champ Hood's untimely deaths. David Ball, the third member of this magical trio is still going stong, but the combination of these three will never be duplicated. This is pure T for Texas and C for Carolina "folkcountryjazzgrass". It is just beautiful, joyful, delighful stuff, perfect for a sunny spring afternoon or cool summer night. Get "An American in Texas" and Walter's solo album, King Tears, and sell your other CD's, cause you wont be needing them anymore. This is what Django would have sounded like if he had been born in South Carolina.

It is was a great lost to music when Walter Hyatt went down in the plane that crashed in the Potomic River several years ago. He wrote and perform some wonderful music with such warmth and simple messages. We are blessed to still have this music as his legacy.
