4.0 out of 5 stars Full of practical and frugal tips and amusing anecdotes!
Did you know that putting an avocado pit in the middle of freshly-made guacamole keeps the dip from turning brown? Or that a homemade tomato facial can tighten pores and make your face glow? Or that putting some Sweet N' Low in hair dye keeps it from irritating sensitive skin? Or that lemonade flavored Kool-Aid can act as a stain remover? Or that cereal box liners can...

Or that cereal box liners can work great as freezer bags? And that gift-wrapped cereal boxes can make great (frugal!) shirt boxes? Or that some leftovers (including used tea leaves and coffee) can make your garden grow? Etcetera! Etcetera!

Girl Talk, compiled by Gigi Garner and published by Five Star Publications, is a collection of useful tips, confidences, and anecdotes like the ones we women might share with our girlfriends over tea or coffee. It's the kind of book that can be picked up and then easily set aside when the next duty calls - and it's full of both useful and amusing tips.

This would make a great coffee table or waiting room type of book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little bit of everything..., November 4, 2009
This review is from: Girl Talk: Celebrities and Other Extraordinary Women Share Their Secrets (Paperback)
The book is filled with both useful and entertaining information. It's fun to hear from women from all different lifestyles. I personally wouldn't have the opportunity to talk to women that work in so many different lines of work, so it was interesting to get a glimpse into their lives and thoughts.

This is not what I would call a sit down and read type of book. It's the type of book that you read a little bit here and a little bit there. (It's good for in the bathroom or in the car.) Topics covered in the book include: Friend Talk, Career Talk, Clothes Talk, Beauty Talk, Health Talk, Home Talk, Kitchen Talk, Mommy Talk, Pet Talk, and Travel Talk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sex in the City proved that Girl's Talk & Share - this book is all about sharing, September 19, 2008
This review is from: Girl Talk: Celebrities and Other Extraordinary Women Share Their Secrets (Paperback)

I've shown my copy to every female co-worker, client, friend and relative - I even read some exerpts from the "Beauty Talk" chapter to my hair dresser the other day. Everyone wants a copy of their own. I just ordered 10 to give as gifts!! I like Lucie Arnez's life tips and Andrea Conte's business tips.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Little Read!, November 5, 2009
This review is from: Girl Talk: Celebrities and Other Extraordinary Women Share Their Secrets (Paperback)
When I got this book in the mail from Five Star Publications, I'll admit - I was a little taken aback by the cover. I was wondering exactly what kind of "girl talk" this was going to be about! When I started reading it, I found that it was just what every woman needs in a relaxing, easy read...nothing ~ahem~ too personal as the cover might suggest. ;)

Who doesn't like getting together with their girlfriends and gabbing about useful and fun ideas for everyday dilemmas? Girl Talk is a compilation of just such "conversations", put together by Gigi Garner (daughter of actor James Garner) by women from various backgrounds - from celebrities like Naomi Judd, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lucie Arnez, and Shari Belafonte to elementary teachers to prison warden! These women offer their own tips on topics such as health care, beauty, careers, relationships, and more.

This book is an easy read, and downright FUN! This would make a great gift this Christmas for any woman in your life! Think of your friends, sisters, moms, hairdresser, or any other woman that is up for fun and helpful Girl Talk!

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing New, November 4, 2009
This review is from: Girl Talk: Celebrities and Other Extraordinary Women Share Their Secrets (Paperback)
Initially upon looking at the semi- sensual woman on the book's cover, and reading the title (including the words extraordinary! and secrets!) I expected something dazzling or on the verge of scandalous, if not just juicy celebrity advice. Then on the back I was very confused by a long passage of what seemed like an ad for an African multi-purpose fabric called a kanga(?). What I found inside was just the completely normal, coffee-klatch, Woman's Day magazine kind of girl talk, and I practically expected one of the ladies to recommend a certain brand of diapers or soap!

The entire book, after a short introduction, is women giving advice. Some quotes stand alone, while others are short anecdotes from someone's life ending in a word of advice, almost like a moral. These women are eager to share what they've learned, and reflect not just celebrities but also the women who support them- the dog trainer, the hair stylist, the friend. Maybe my age is showing, but very few of the names were familiar to me. The book is broken down into sections in which the advice follows a predictable theme such as beauty, children, etc.

Some of the advice is from another era- "use a knee sock as a hair band" (?) and some was timeless- let the kids play in the cardboard box your appliance came in. Peppered with black and white publicity photos of the women who impart their life experience, this is a book meant for the car or the bathroom, where you can pick it up when you have a minute, and put it back down to come back to later.
