5.0 out of 5 stars A Truly Refreshing Insight into Prayer for Teens
I think this is a wonderful book for Christian girls who want to grow in their faith but don't know how. It makes prayer so attractive and easy! After reading this book, you will want to pray, I guarantee it. Every teenage Christian girl should read this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This book is O.K. I'm not going to say it's great. Susie Shellenburger, the editor of Brio magazine has helpful things to say in this book, but the way she shares it (conversation form) can get a little confusing, and annoying. At some points, it's hard to follow. I also worry that it might be hard to relate to. You had to be in almost the same position as the girl for it...

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome book, May 15, 2003
This review is from: Girl Talk With God (Paperback)
Susie Shellenberger, the editor of Brio and Brio & Beyond magazines, compiled this book from all the "God Said, I Said" articles that appeared in Brio nad Brio and Beyond over the years. She added a few new articles and some commentary for this book. The result is that this book is one of the best books I've ever read on the subject matter of prayer. The book, which is several converstaions between a girl and God on topics ranging from questioning Christianity to sex, is a very good read. In it you learn how to pray from the heart based on the girl's conversations with God, and Susie sums up the articles with some comments on how to use them in real life, i.e., get comfortable enough with God to tell Him everything. I really liked this book and would recommend it to any Christians I know, because it is an excellent book on prayer.

At some points, it's hard to follow. I also worry that it might be hard to relate to. You had to be in almost the same position as the girl for it to help. If she had written this information down as a devotional form, I believe it could be a great book, however, the way she chose turned me away.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not For My Girl, February 14, 2011
This review is from: Girl Talk With God (Paperback)
I was excited to review this book; in hopes to pass it along to my preteen daughter. I read the book over a few days. I had an uneasiness with the book, but couldn't pinpoint what it was. I have read and heard Shellenberger's message over the years; and have always been pleased with what she brings to today's female youth. I left the book bedside hoping that my husband would take a look at it to; and help me figure out what was giving me the apprehensiveness about this read. This book is written directly at teenage girls, asking questions and needing answers about what God is thinking. First of all, who can know what God is thinking? Is He not perfect and omniscient; and doesn't His own inerrant Word state that, "In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God." (I Corinthians 2:11) I feel that it is a far stretch for an author to calculate what God is thinking. Although, for the most part, the advice in the book is sound; there is added jargon that isn't from God's mouth. But, I do not disregard this work as a whole. I do think that the topics are relevant (they include heavy-hitters: divorce, media, cutting, eating disorders, sex, pornography and persecution). If a parent were considering this book for her daughter, I would consider reading it first to ensure it falls in line with your belief system and what is taught in your household. The book will give your daughter timely encouragement. Though, I'm quite unsure it will hold her attention. Some of the chapters are filled with banter and are lead-footed in getting to the point. Will I give this book to my daughter? Probably not. Would I give it to a girl that has delved deep into the secular world and doesn't have a parent or Christian mentor to go to? Likely. Don't discount this book - see for yourself and be the judge. (I am book reviewer for BookSneeze. In exchange for my reviews, I get to keep their books for free!)

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected..., January 19, 2005
This review is from: Girl Talk With God (Paperback)
I thought that this was a book about prayer and how to develop your prayer life. It really isn't. It's made up conversations about a girl talking to God. The book is still good, but it's not what I thought, which was dissapointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Work, September 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Girl Talk With God (Paperback)
This book does a fantastic job of portraying many complex and deep issues in a way that is very easy to read and understand. The insight that are brought to these topics will make the reader view many issues differently. It also explains the guys' point of view into perspective so girls can better understand the reason behind staying modest and pure. I would highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars True conversations with God, June 13, 2011
This review is from: Girl Talk With God (Paperback)
Not every person carries on full conversations with God, but I do and my written conversations look exactly like the ones in this book. This is real and this is God.

I have lots of books on prayer, but none that my teen daughters would ever want to look at. This is the first one that I can share. The book has 23 conversations which are not only great for dealing with the topics, but they are also wonderful for showing girls how to talk to their Heavenly Father.

This is God talking through the lens of cultural evangelical Christianity. No theology is discussed so this book should appeal to parents of teen girls no matter the denomination or religious variations.

The publisher provided me with a complimentary copy of this book through Booksneeze. I received no compensation and the opinion is wholly my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, June 11, 2011
This review is from: Girl Talk With God (Paperback)
I found this book to be a great blessing in my life. As a 19 year old I worried that it would deal with issues directed to more younger teen girls. I am glad to say I was wrong and that I recommend this book to all teen girls looking to get closer to God. Get the book! I guarantee you will not be disappointed...it also makes a great gift for your fellow girlfriends :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Wholesome Advice for Young Girls, June 3, 2011
This review is from: Girl Talk With God (Paperback)
Girl Talk With God presents a wholesome perspective for young girls on difficult subjects like divorce, premarital sex, eating disorders, pornography and masochistic cutting. Other subjects include choice of language, modesty, getting married, and the impact of social media on reputation.

Written as an ongoing dialog between God and a young girl, this book inspires young girls to develop healthy attitudes about themselves. It addresses real issues with Biblical solutions.

As the editor of Susie Magazine and as a former founding editor of Brio Magazine, author Susie Shellenberger has mentored young girls for decades. Her chatty, non-threatening style couches sometimes-difficult messages in acceptable terms. She never talks down to her audience as she encourages young girls to be their best. I heartily recommend Girl Talk With God by Susie Shellenberger to teen girls and their parents.

My thanks to the publisher for a complimentary copy of this book, given for purposes of review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Prayer Boost, May 17, 2011
This review is from: Girl Talk With God (Paperback)
"...It's actually all about talking to Him and listening to Him talk back." reads the front cover of this book. In twenty-three compact chapters ranging in subject from persecution to forgiveness to reaching out to others, Susie Shellenberger illustrates her point. Prayer doesn't have to be a one-way conversation.

Written in a short, non-stuffy, simple style that appeals to teen girls with little extra time on their hands, this book is an invitation to radically transform your prayer life into a relationship. "But be prepared: God tells girls the truth..."

Girl Talk with God was interesting, partly because both the narrator (the one praying) and the Lord (who responded frequently) seem so in tune. At some points, I smiled and laughed and cried right along with the narrator. At other times, I felt a little surprised at some of the things God said, just because I don't feel He would talk that way. Did it challenge me to let God get a word in edgewise during my prayer times? Yes. I applaud this book as appealing to the target audience and yet uncompromising in the portrayal of Biblical truth. This book grasped my attention from the first page until the last. I would recommend this book to others searching for a light, simple book about prayer, meant not to overwhelm, but inspire.
