Product Description

Editorial Review

The Password Journal 3 combines technology and secret-keeping, making it of interest to girls who like neat gadgets ... and privacy (and what girl doesn’t?). In addition to functions for setting important dates, times, and other data, the journal has a secret compartment inside for treasured belongings: promise rings, phone numbers, photos, etc. A night-light allows for transactions that can be made only under the cover of darkness. Unlike past versions of the Password Journal, this one lets you custom decorate the cover by placing photos under the removable vinyl cover. The coolest feature, though, is undoubtedly the voice-coded access--once the password is entered via the built-in microphone, the machine opens only at the voice of its owner. We found it a bit tricky to get this to work the first time, and had better luck whispering our code word than speaking it. Low batteries (three AAs) may cause the security functions to behave erratically. --Amazon.com Toy Reviewers

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth It For What It Is, November 15, 2003
= Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Radica Password Journal (Toy)
My 10 year old daughter was thrilled to receive this diary for her birthday -- she's at the age where privacy is increasingly important. A few notes for parents:
1. It is accessible by opening the battery compartment and inserting a paperclip into the reset button. The journal then automatically resets and a new password must be entered. Therefore, a concerned parent can access the contents; but your child will know that the journal has been opened. Seems a fair deal.
2. It is a piece of plastic. A nosy brother (as mentioned in an earlier review) who prys it open will break the lock. Seems some discipline and the penance of paying for a new diary would be the solution in that case. This journal is not going to overcome problems with lack of mutual respect within a household.
3. Long passwords overwhelm the software and result in the frustration with the journal refusing the password. I recommend a one or two syllable password. It took some patience, but my daughter got the hang of it. For this, it gets a "3" in durability.
4. My daughter and I have very similar voices, but in playing with it with her, I have been unable to "spoof" the password.
5. Yes the diary is short, but it is simple and inexpensive to add new notebooks.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Few Times Every Month, May 30, 2004

Well,I like this toy alot but it has it's ups and downs. Like when I got it on my birthday,May 6,I was so exited I wanted use it right away. So I opened it and read the directions and got it working and then I put some stuff in it. The next day I went to open it again and it did not open so I waited till the evening and tried again. I got a little frustrated and so I went in a quiet room and tried again and it worked. So I Have a few ideas that you might want to try if you have been having some troubles with your Password Journal 3,1.ALWAYS BE IN A QUIET ROOM.2.ALWAYS USE A LOW VOICE WHEN YOU SAY YOUR PASSWORD.3.WHEN YOU MAKE YOUR PASSWORD BE SURE YOU SAY A SHORT ONE. I still have a few problems with it but when I use these tips I have an easier time with it and I have faith in it to work perfectly soon!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE SECRETS TO USING THIS TOY..., November 4, 2004

THIS TOY IS FABULOUS - A MUST-BUY!
Most of the reviews I have read for this toy are terrible - telling you not to buy the Password Journal 3. I own one, and it is such a wonderful thing to have! The only reason everyone hates the journal is because they don't know how to handle it quite properly. I know all the secrets to owning it, and here are a few for your benefit:

OPENING:
When setting a password for your journal, sit next to a piano. Hit a key on the piano that is easy for you to sing, and pick a one-syllable word to sing to that note. For example, my password was "Dog" on middle C. Then, when asked for the password, simply hit the chosen key on the piano, sing the word, and voila! It opens like a charm. Once this is done, I highly recommend that you leave the security setting on low - unless you or your child is an advanced user of the Password Journal.

NO MORE WRITING ROOM:
When you have run out of writing room in the journal, flip over the note-pad - you'll be writing on the back of your previous entries, but it saves the hassle of buying a refill.

THIS PRODUCT WAS WONDERFUL (if you know your way around it). IF YOU ARE LOOKING INTO PURCHASING, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

P.S. I hope these tips helped!
