Book Description

2012 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Semi-finalist
Post-apocalyptic science fiction with romantic elements

What do you do when you’re trapped between death and the devil? To protect her young daughter from a madman and a tyrant, Rachel Pryne must trust an enemy—one of the alien warriors who conquered Earth.

It is 2032, the Ohnenrai—Earth’s humanoid alien conquerors—orbit the planet, and Terran reproduction is failing. Rachel, a trained medic, is struggling to protect her seven-year-old daughter, Pearl, from the sexual predation of their penal colony’s leader. Having fathered the girl by rape, he now intends to take her on her eighth birthday, only six weeks away.

Then Rachel finds her unlikely champion—an injured Ohnenrai soldier who appears in her yard one stormy evening. She knows she may be choosing death over the devil in trusting this warrior, but she doesn’t know that her trust, and her DNA, will make her one of the most important and endangered people to ever set foot aboard an Ohnenrai starship.

Equal parts science fiction, suspense, and romance, Girl Under Glass moves from a post-apocalyptic wilderness in the American Pacific Northwest to a high-tech world aboard an alien starship furnished with all the stolen comforts of Earth. Readers meet Rachel Pryne, whose parents' lifelong and life-ending connection to the Ohnenrai has set her upon a path she never wanted to travel. And they're introduced to Ehtishem, an Ohnenrai soldier who exists to save his dying people, but who faces enemies from within and without his own military.

The only possible solution to the Ohnenrai’s extinction lies within Rachel, but all she wants to do is protect her daughter and see Earth’s alien conquerors go straight to hell.

“…a compellingly bumpy ride of a love story….”–Publishers Weekly* Reviewer, ABNA Semi-finals

About the Author

I write books that entail elements of fantasy or science fiction, often include historical settings, and have been described as lyrical, powerful, and sensual. My first book, Girl Under Glass, was a 2012 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Semi-finalist. My work includes sensual love scenes, but not erotica. While you won't find any "dangly bits", you will find passion. I also am unafraid of violence. That being said, I'm a firm believer in the right amount at the right time and trusting you, the reader, to fill in the gaps with your own imagination. I hold an English literature degree from UCLA, which was gathering dust until 2009 when I began work on my first historical fantasy novel. I live in Seattle with my husband and daughter and our two rock 'em sock 'em catbots.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Entertaining Story August 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a very entertaining book and even though I am generally not a Sci Fi fan, I'm glad I took a chance on it.

The author has a smooth, easy to read writing style and the story is incredibly descriptive without being overdone or complicated. The protagonist, Rachel, is both strong and vulnerable as she tries to provide for herself and her daughter in a hostile camp where she is considered a sinner (through no fault of her own) and is shunned by almost everyone even though she is the only medic in the camp. The head Elder, Cyrus, is brutal and completely fixated on Rachel and has caused her tremendous pain. When an unexpectated stranger, Ehtishem, arrives at her door needing medical attention, she doesn't turn him away and so begins the chain of events that will change everyone's lives.

But who is Ehtishem really and what does her want from Rachel? Can he be trusted? She just doesn't know but she is forced to put her faith in him - he is the lesser of two evils or is he? The story is exciting and surprising, a little bit romantic, sometimes sad and often suspenseful.

I will definitely be watching out for the second book in the series - I can't wait to find out what the future holds for Rachel, her daughter, Pearl and Ehtishem and his people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read! August 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
First and foremost, I don't really read stuff about aliens...and I read A LOT! I read the premise for this book and it sounded interesting. I downloaded the sample and was like.."wow, I can definitely read this". I was not disappointed. Rachel and Ehtishem are great characters, but I love, love, love Pearl! Great book and I look forward to the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most exciting book I've read in a long time August 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I meant to spend the weekend watching the Olympics but I started reading Girl Under Glass instead and found it difficult to put down. A true (e)page-turner throughout, the story of Rachel, her daughter, and the Stranger who changed their lives is non-stop action. The wonderful author, Sid Fleischman, advised writers to 'up the ante' in plotting their stories. He would have been proud of this author's relentless use of the technique.

I might have passed on this book had I known it was science fiction because that's not my favorite genre. As a result, I read without expectation or prejudice and let the story unfold to carry me on a riveting journey that sometimes had me on the edge of my seat. Quite an accomplishment since this isn't a movie--yet! By the time I realized we were in the not-too-distant future with characters who couldn't all claim Earth as their home, I had to keep reading. The archetypal nature of this story left me cheering (and crying), especially for the incredibly strong and courageous Rachel. That there will be more to come about Rachel and Ehtishem makes me very happy. Ferahi-va, Monica Enderle Pierce.

5.0 out of 5 stars two worlds in one
I really love that you get two well developed worlds in this first installment of the series. Some authors struggle to create one!

4.0 out of 5 stars fun read
This book was a pretty fun read. It had some unexpected elements.
Sometimes the character development seemed off and the characters didn't have a firm sense of who they are.
