Editorial Reviews

Dido, one of the world's best-selling female recording artists of all time with over 29 million albums sold, returns with her strongest album yet entitled GIRL WHO GOT AWAY

Working once again with her brother Rollo Armstrong, who produced the majority of the album, Dido collaborated with a "who's who" of hit makers including Brian Eno, Jeff Bhasker, Rick Nowels and Greg Kurstin to create an album of finely, self-penned songs and soul-baring pop with electro, folk, hip hop, ambient and dance infusions.

The album GIRL WHO GOT AWAY is a captivating collection of well-crafted songs and stunning production: from the euphoric "Go Dreaming," to the barbed wit of "End of Night," the folky Sitting On The Roof Of The World" to the dance-y-yet-dark "Blackbird" to the album's title track which Dido shares: "It's one of my favorite songs on the record," she says. "...but I guess it also sums up the last few years for me. Taking a step back from it all and going off to have the whole happy adventure of starting a family and making an album that I really am so proud of. And now I just can't wait for people to hear it."

Customer Reviews

Her voice & lyrics are great.
Jeffery Alligood
There are songs that try to make a point in its sound and lyrics and they do actually but, there are others that just get lost.
NUEVE
There are absolutely no fillers on this album and Dido is a too good of a song writer to do that anyway.

Dido's original strength as an artist came from the rich, intense atmosphere of her music coupled with the pain and self-reflection in her lyrics. As someone who loved Dido's first two albums and was disappointed with her third, I was excited to learn that Dido was finally releasing a fourth album, and I had high hopes that the generally poor reception that Safe Trip Home received would drive her back to the spectacular, lush sounds of No Angel and Life For Rent. Girl Who Got Away is a partial retreat, not altogether disappointing but not entirely satisfying.

The good news is that Dido has indeed returned to electronica, which immediately elevates this album over Safe Trip Home's dreary, flat presentation. End Of Night and Let's Runaway are joys to listen to, with audio depth and complexity that complement Dido's fragile voice. No Freedom could easily have been a song originally intended for No Angel, and Let Us Move On and All I See would fit comfortably among the songs contained on Life For Rent. This isn't to suggest that they are mere replicas of earlier songs, but that they are interesting enough to earn a place among those songs.

Unfortunately, Love To Blame and Lost sound a bit too much like sleepy cast-offs from Safe Trip Home, and songs like Girl Who Got Away, Go Dreaming, and Just Say Yes never quite reach their potential. Several of the songs on the album sound as though they are unfinished and were created purely to pass along to DJs to round out through remixes. Many of the songs lack an audio anchor and contain the hint of a build-up without ever offering a release. They are safe songs that float along and are begging to be completed by EDM wizards in a musical laboratory.

I agree with a lot of reviewers that this album requires a couple of listens. When it was announced FOREVER ago that her 4th album would drop I was super excited. Life For Rent and No Angel are among my top favorite albums, but I just couldn't fall in love with Safe Trip Home. It was slower and somber and it didn't seem like 'my' Dido. When I first listened to this album I rolled my eyes and thought "Not Again!" But after I grabbed a cup of coffee and relaxed on the sofa I put my ipod on my Bose dock and just sat there and listened to the whole thing again. I love it. I love it. I love it.

Its certainly not ground breaking. But her voice...is haunting. Its the most powerful aspect of the album. It shines through every track. There is a heavy emphasis on electronica throughout and I doubt any of these tracks will get any radio attention, but then again she hasn't received that much radio play aside from White Flag and Sand in My Shoes. I played this for my co-workers the other night (all males) and they really liked it.

This album is full of tracks that can easily stand alone and demand respect! Blackbird, Just Say Yes, Let's Runaway, End of Night, Love to Blame, Go Dreaming, and Loveless Hearts are AMAZING. Go Dreaming reminds me of Take My Hand. There is a real range of sounds and emotions on this album that her other albums lacked. The lyrics still read like poetry -

I can smile now
And turn away
Come over here
So you can see me walk away
And celebrate
The end of night

This is not to say that the album is perfect. I am not a fan of Let Us Move On and All I See because they are basically duets that just....fall flat.

OK - I rarely will write a review on something and I think this is my first review on Amazon, but this album is AWESOME!
Dido has gone back to a more electronic sound [thank God!] and her voice has never sounded so ethereal!
If you're a Dido fan, you MUST own this album. "Let's Runaway" has changed my life and I've only owned the album for less than 24 hours, and I've listened to it like 100 times! "Blackbird" and "Love to Blame" are some other standout tracks. I plan on keeping this album in rotation for weeks to come!

I guess if a listener wanted to hear some hip hop mixed in with Dido's otherwise wonderful voice, I would recommend this cd. There are a few good songs, but none that are really memorable. Sometimes, however, music has a way of growing on me, so who knows... perhaps I'll revisit this review in a few months and have something different to say.

I think this is the best CD yet from my favorite artist. 'Day before we went to war' is my favorite song on the album. The song variety is great too, with a lot of songs on the album. It has both the classic Dido rhythms and vocals with some new syles too. I love it..an easy 5 stars

I'd better at once make it clear that "No Angel" and "Life for Rent" still are my favorite Dido albums. Both albums contain such a rare large number of great songs and I always gladly return to these her first two albums.

You had to wait for five years on Dido's third album "Safe Trip Home" from 2008. Personal events in Didos life were reflected on this album, which had a distinctly sad tone and which was significantly less commercial.

"Safe Trip Home" contained fewer "big" songs than the first two albums, but it has a warm and honest feel that compensates the less distinctive songwriting. Songs like "Look No Further", "Quiet Times" and "Northern Skies" are individually very strong songs, which also helps to lift this album.

Now five years have passed again, and Dido has just released her fourth album. One can hardly say that her music has taken a revolutionary turn, but there is generally a far more easy mood on the album, which is also to a greater extent than previously is spiced with electronic elements.

I do, however, feel, like iI did with "Safe Trip Home", that some songs sound a little too similar, especially if you choose deleuxe version, which contains six extra tracks.

"No Freedom" is a great pop song which has a sound close to the "Life For Rent" album.

The quiet and almost acoustic "Sitting on the Roof of the World", is for me another the album's great songs.

Some songs take longer to embrace. Among the songs that have grown on me are "Loveless Hearts" and "End of Night".

On the bonus disc, which generally keeps the level of CD 1 songs like "All I See" and "Lost" are my preliminary favorites.
