Book Description

10 and up5 and up
How can a girl have fun with a game if she's only watching from the sidelines? That's what sixteen-year-old Kelly Williams wonders when her best friend, Faith, complains that it's time to stop pretending and find real romance. As Kelly sees her friends, her older brother and even her parents knowingly and unknowingly play at romance, she decides to create a real game - a board game called Romance that captures the way people behave in matters of love and dating.

From broken hearts to happily ever after, Caroline Cooney's inventive novel is sure to capture readers' hearts.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Cooney, in such books as Among Friends and Saturday Night, has explored the many faces of love several times. Here she rolls all her expertise into one book, with a thoughtful heroine who needs to know how she stacks up in the game of love. Kelly actually invents a board game called "Romance," at first for fun and then for a classroom assignment. The game is a success and so is Kelly's love lifeshe gets Will, who was targeted early in the book as the boy to watch. The rest comprises one philosophical question after another: Can there be true love between people who seem more concerned with exchanging frivolous gifts? How can anything on earth be as unfair as unrequited love? What does a girl do about the truly self-centered people among her friends? (Grin and bear them.) This is not new territory to any fan of the romance novel, but Cooney writes with such clarity of her characters' entanglements that she brings fresh perspective to the game. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9 Cooney again takes a classroom assignment as a premise for a light tale of romance. This time the class is sociology and the assignment is to develop a project on a social issue. Kelly chooses romance, a subject that she is trying to define in her life as well as for her board game. She watches her parents' relationship hit a rocky spot; her brother get discarded by a narcissistic class beauty; and her overweight friend moon over a boy who doesn't return the interest. As she watches the rules of love keep changing, so, too, does her game begin to become more realistic: ``You work at a car wash together'' replaces ``He has his own jet and takes you to Dallas.'' A boy named Will begins to pay attention to her, and Kelly has a chance at a real romance. The story is dotted with several moralistic statements such as ``love is comfort,'' and ``love is an emotion, not objects,'' and the pat ending is as unrealistic as the board game's ``Happily Ever After.'' Yet the progression of Kelly's definition of romance will give young readers some thoughtful entertainment, and the book should be a hit. 3.0 out of 5 stars not quite a romance......, January 31, 2005
This review is from: The Girl Who Invented Romance (Paperback)
although well written, "The Girl Who Invented Romance" can get boring. Kelly Williams is a sixteen year old junior who has never had a date, much less a boyfriend. She constantly daydreams about finally meeting that one special guy. She decides to turn her daydream into a romance board game, in which the goal is to get to happily ever after. What begins as a game that would be more acurately titled "A Fairy Tale Romance" turns into a real life romance situation as Kelly witnesses her brother and his girlfriend (the perfect couple) break up, realizes that her parents marraige (the most romantic one on earth) may not be that rock solid, and begins to fall for the least expected guy ever. The book is good, but I felt that too much of it was simply daydreams and fluff, and not enough of a solid plot.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very cute!, March 26, 2010

This review is from: The Girl Who Invented Romance (Paperback)
Though it was hard to really get into, this was a really cute book. The characters were all diverse and enjoyable, the plots and issues flowed together really well, and the humor will have you giggling on every page.

I like how nothing ended up how it started. Towards the beginning, there was a lot of foreshadowing when it came to the relationship of certain characters, but it switches up and for that, I was very thankful. There isn't too much to the plot, so you end up depending on the characters for substance, which is fortunately given.

The game is hard to imagine, hard to picture in your head. Luckily for me, the copy I got from the library had the actual game attached the back. It's an awesome visual and helps you appreciate the story a lot more, so try to get a hold of that if you plan on reading!

Overall, it was very adorable. Well written and humorous, this book will have you planning your very own party- complete with snacks and the romance game. If I could've taken the game out of the book, I probably would've gathered some friends and played myself. I definitely recommend checking it out!

3.0 out of 5 stars PERIOD 7 MRS. SULLIVAN, November 3, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Girl Who Invented Romance (Paperback)
Have you ever wished you could have the perfect date? Well in the book "The Girl Who Invented Romance" by Caroline Cooney thats what the main character wished. This books genre is fiction. In the story the main character Kelly Williams, wished for just that, the perfect date and the most perfect boyfriend. Kelly is a sixteen year old girl who has never had a boyfriend let alone a date.Kelly is very outspoken and dramatic. In the book Kelly invents a game called "Romance". In the game you can go on the perfect date and be set up with your perfect match. But when match is someone Kelly least expected him to be she becomes very confused and has trouble finding out what romance really means. I would recomend this book because Kelly goes through alot thihgs normal girls do and its a very interesting book.
