Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Dundee, Scotland, in the 1920s is firmly divided into the haves and the have-nots. Eva Masson, tenement resident and part of a family of jute mill workers, is among the latter. She narrowly misses having to work in the mills thanks to a scholarship donated by the owner of the very mill her family works in. Eva eventually falls in love with the mill owner’s son, Nicholas. The Massons believe Eva is blindsided by his fine clothes and red sports car, but Eva and Nicholas are truly in love. But while Eva is concerned about her family accepting their relationship, Nicholas is concerned about his family’s suspicion of Eva’s increasing interest in labor disputes and the mill workers’ union. How can Eva stay true to her roots while staying true to Nicholas? Nicholas and Eva must meet in the middle to satisfy their families without compromising themselves or their love. Douglas’ gentle novel couches the classic “wrong side of the tracks” story in historical detail and drama. --Hilary Hatton --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction Or..., July 31, 2008
... fact-short history-of-Dundee-meets -Barbara-Cartland?

The problem with this book is it was neither enough history of the jute mills of Dundee of the early twentieth century, nor a proper romance. If one is a romance novel reader--and I admittedly am not--the brief insertions of the dissatisfaction of the poor with their dreadful lot would have annoyed me. As a reader of historical fiction, which I am occaionally, the inclusion of the rather insipid romantic plot--wealthy mill owner's son falls for poor mill girl; reminiscent of the Montagues/Capulets, West Side Story, Love Story, etc.--was pesky.
