Book Description

April 23, 2002

Writing in the bestselling tradition of Barbara Delinsky and Patricia Gaffney, Judith Henry Wall, in her new novel, The Girlfriends Club, has crafted a wry and moving story of four women who have been best friends since childhood. Through the years, and through many spiritual crises -- including the recent divorces that three of them have endured -- they have given one another emotional support. But when they are forced to share a secret that threatens to disrupt their lives, each of them begins to wonder if this bond of friendship that has held for almost four decades will be strong enough to withstand the strain.

On the eve of Mary Sue Prescott's forty-fifth birthday, she is joined by her three closest friends, Gretchen, Pamela, and Dixie, at the lakeside cabin that has been their refuge for years. This meeting of "The Girlfriends Club" -- as they jokingly call themselves -- is not, however, strictly a celebration, since the following morning, Mary Sue is scheduled to undergo a mastectomy.

At the same time that they are dealing with Mary Sue's operation, another crisis arises, requiring the three women to make a decision that results in a haunting and terrifying secret.

How these friends individually deal with their terrible secret, while going on with their lives, is a reflection of how each has coped with the traumas and stresses of the past.

  • Pamela, the only one of the four still married, lives in a state of perpetual fear that she will upset or embarrass her older husband, a respected judge, who is both rich and controlling, and who disapproves of Pamela's "divorcée" friends.
  • Gretchen is fearful as well, but her anxiety stems from her concern about her future following a particularly acrimonious divorce that has left her both bitter and distrustful of all men.
  • Dixie, more amicably divorced, has gone on with her life -- at least up to a point. There is a man in her life again, but she keeps him a secret from her friends because she has broken one of their taboos by having an affair with a married man.
  • For Mary Sue, divorce has been especially painful, as she has not stopped caring for her former husband. A devoted wife and mother, she was devastated when he left her for a sexy, much more sophisticated widow. Now, afraid not to have a man in her life, Mary Sue has talked herself into dating again, even if it means settling for an abusive relationship.

How these women deal with their personal secrets and fears, and with the trials and tribulations of growing older and trying to find a place in a world in which everyone seems to be younger and prettier and sexier, is at the heart of The Girlfriends Club. It is a story told with compassion, humor, and absolute truth, one that explores the dynamics of friendship, and the secrets both shared and held in their hearts, as four women learn that it is never too late to live, to trust, and to love again.

    From Publishers Weekly

In a tradition familiar to readers of women's novels, four women, best friends through four decades, make up what one of the friends dubs the Girlfriends' Club. As a lovable first-grader destined to be a cheerleader, Mary Sue felt sorry for Dixie (who wore glasses and orthopedic shoes), and enlisted her, along with Gretchen (taller than the boys so they called her The Monster ) and Pamela, who had a retarded brother. Popular novelist Wall (If Love Were All; Blood Sisters) begins her latest at a Kansas lakeside cottage where the girls frequently meet to celebrate marriages and births, mourn losses by death or divorce, or share anxieties. Mary Sue faces a mastectomy the next morning, on her 45th birthday. She is asleep when a shocking event occurs, and her friends decide to keep it secret from her. In due course, Mary Sue commences chemotherapy while a series of flashbacks hint at how the others, in the light of past decisions, are likely to deal with their agreed-upon silence. Pamela, the only one still married, is constantly fearful of upsetting her demanding husband, presently slated for a judgeship. Gretchen, still handsome and athletic, hated all men when her spouse dumped her, but her loneliness is so distressing that she signs up with a dating service. Dixie's divorce was not bitter, and when she and her son encounter a robust vintner on a trip to Tuscany, she begins a relationship despite the fact that he supports a wife and daughter elsewhere. Each of the four women confronts her own demons, as well as those faced by all women of a certain age, with distinctive courage and the will to persevere. The neat twist that ends this suspenseful, highly readable tale is appropriate, credible and satisfying.

    From Library Journal

Is middle age really that bad? On the eve of Mary Sue's 45th birthday, four women who have been friends since childhood try to answer that question as they gather at a lakeside cabin to celebrate. Mary Sue is going in for a mastectomy in the morning. Gretchen, after years of dealing with her philandering husband, is torn apart by anger at his leaving. Pamela has made many personal sacrifices for her older husband in order to not become an "old maid." The divorced Dixie is the only friend comfortable with her life, but she also has the pleasure of a secret love in Italy. But after Mary Sue goes to bed, her drunk and arrogant boyfriend shows up looking for a fight. When he gets into a shouting match with the three women, he stumbles, falls, and breaks his neck. Dixie, Pamela, and Gretchen cover up his death and spend the next year covering their tracks. With this new work, Wall (My Mother's Daughter) has created four entertaining female characters. They are all trying to find their niche in the world, and it isn't until they give up looking for a man to save them that they realize they have what it takes to make their own lives full and happy. An enjoyable read for a lazy weekend. Marianne Fitzgerald, P.L. of Charlotte & Mecklenburg

5.0 out of 5 stars A LOVELY BOOK FOR ALL WOMEN, October 22, 2002
This review is from: The Girlfriends Club: A Novel (Hardcover)
Judith Henry Wall latest novel, The Girlfriends Club takes us to the state of Kansas.

Four women, who have been friends since childhood are now in their mid forties and learning what life is like at mid-life after being divorced.

Meet MARY SUE the spark amongst them, who is about to have a breast operation. She is involved with Walter; a dentist since her divorce, but even then, she cannot get her ex-husband Barry off of her mind.

DIXIE the flower shop owner who never complains but has good reason not to. She has hidden a secret from her friends for some time now.

GRETCHEN the tall blond sports oriented woman who hates her husband with a passion, and wishes he were dead.

PAMELA the only one of the women still married to her husband Clay; a Judge who directs her every move.

However, on Mary Sue's 45th birthday, the day before her operation the girls decide to gather at Dixie's Lakeside retreat to celebrate her birthday with dinner and drinks and lots of moral support. They enjoy themselves but soon realize that Walter; Mary Sue current beau who was supposed to join them for drinks, is noticeably absent. Having had a bit too much fun, Mary Sue goes off to bed early leaving her friends to entertain him when he arrives.
Walter turns up intoxicated and totally out of it and then something very awry happens....something accidental...and the women make a conscious decision not to let Mary Sue know of this occurrence.

What happens that night will live in the memories of the three women for the rest of their lives. See how their lives are played out after this incident and I'm sure you'll have little anxious moments waiting to see what transpires next.

Besides the little mystery here, there are some tender and heartfelt moments which will keep the reader eager and glued to the book as I was.

This would be a wonderful Xmas or Birthday gift for a good friend especially if bought in the hard cover edition. Happy reading!!

    4.0 out of 5 stars A "girlie/feel good" book, January 26, 2004

I thought this book was pretty good - I read it in 2 days. I was glad to get to the end when everyone came to the realization that they could indeed function without a man - a few of the ladies (gretchen, pam & marysue) made it seem like they thought so little of themselves that they went out with/married any kind of man, just to say they had a man - which is so totally OUT. Dixie is the only one who seemed really cool to me, mostly because she had come to grips with her husband divorcing her & moved on. But all in all, it was a pretty good read.
