Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In The Girls' Book of Friendship: Cool Quotes, True Stories, Secrets, and More edited by Catherine Dee, women as diverse as Madonna, Helen Keller and hospital coordinator Wini Scott weigh in on what it takes to make and keep friends. An inspiring collection.

From School Library Journal

Gr 5 Up-This collection of stories, quotes, and poems by and about girls' friendship pulls in some 250 entries from such celebrities as Oprah Winfrey and Madonna as well as from everyday teens. The young people's stories share humorous and poignant snippets from friendships old and new. A "Friendly Fact" appears at the end of many chapters, which shares a bit of trivia. The book is divided into 30 chapters with topics ranging from "The Power of Pals" to "Tokens of Affection" to "Boy Friends." Girls will return to its pages again and again when they are looking for just the right words to say "thanks," a bit of inspiration, and practical advice as well. While nothing new is presented, this well-put-together collection makes a nice pick-me-up for a friend in need or a good resource for one's personal reference shelf. A serviceable addition to popular paperback shelves.

More About the Author

Hi!

Here's a little background on my books.

The first one was The Girls' Guide to Life, published in 1997 and now in its second edition (2005). I love this book because it helps girls develop strong self-esteem, fight sexism in the media, and stand up for themselves in general. When I wrote it, there was a real lack of books to help girls in these areas, and I loved being able to provide that kind of book.

I've also done a series of small books for girls--most notably The Girls' Book of Wisdom--a bunch of cool quotations I put together especially for girls. The other books are The Girls' Book of Friendship (practical advice on making and keeping pals), The Girls' Book of Success and The Girls' Book of Love.

They've won awards and been translated for distribution internationally. Hallmark did a Gold Crown (hard cover) edition of The Girls' Book of Friendship. It cracks me up that this book is just as popular with women of all ages as it is with girls..

My favorite moments these days are when I get an e-mail or letter from a girl telling me that she loved one or the other of the books, or just saying hi. There is nothing better!

I hope you'll visit my web site, www.empowergirls.com. It has a quiz for girls, "quips & tips" for parents, recommended books, etc.

Cheers!

Catherine

5.0 out of 5 stars Celebrating Friendships, Celebrating Ourselves!, October 14, 2001
This review is from: The Girls' Book of Friendship: Cool Quotes, True Stories, Secrets and More (Paperback)
An award-winning author and expert on the issues concerning young women and girls, Catherine Dee has again delved into the inner spirits and expansive outer lives of her subject, this time getting to the heart of what makes a young woman's life so enriching: her friendships. The Girls' Book of Friendship is a collection of personal essays, inspirational quotes and heartfelt poetry that shine a light on the bonds that give breath to our being. Not limited to same-age, same-gender peer friendships, The Girls' Book celebrates the sibling, parent and other relative as friend, as well as the often overlooked value in the comradeship found in members of the opposite sex. With celebrity quotes from pop icons including Oprah Winfrey, Madonna, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, The Girls' Book also invokes the likes of Jane Austen, Helen Keller and Alice Walker. Quotes given by a wide range of women -- from a present-day environmental scientist to poets of antiquity -- highlight how the importance of friendship is perhaps one of the few universal truths that breaks all boundaries of time, place, culture, age, religion and race. With Pal Projects like starting a mother-daughter reading group to Friendly Facts and Quick Lists that offer tips on being a good listener and help on evaluating whether or not someone would make a good friend, this 200-page compact pocketbook proves that good things come in small packages. Dee has once again tapped into the playfulness and appreciation of a woman's world while underscoring a common sense of empowerment.

This review is from: The Girls' Book of Friendship: Cool Quotes, True Stories, Secrets and More (Paperback)
With all the attention paid to Odd Girl Out and Queen Bees and Wanna Be's, we all want to help our girls have healthful friendships. The Girl's Book of Friendship would make a great gift to inspire them-- for going back to school, for the holidays, for a pick me up.
