Grade 3-6-- This excellent book misleads with its title and cover; instead of a guide to manners and behavior, it deals with the larger issues of the values or ethics children may need to adopt in order to cope throughout their lives. Issues discussed are self-esteem, pleasure and pain, shame, guilt, sympathy, anger and fear, and love; a chapter called "Stop, Look, Listen, and Think" tackles problem-solving and the consequences of actions. Gardner treats psychological principles in an understandable and attractive way for children. The black-and-white illustrations are both humorous and informative, providing a balance to the didactic material. It is not intended, however, to be read by children independently.
