3.0 out of 5 stars middlin' Foghat album, March 4, 2011

tim-bobby (Austin, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This is a fun album, but not as good as some of their classics (Energized, Night Shift, Stone Blue). This is the first album they recorded with their original guitarist Rod Price. The guitarist on this album is Erik Cartwright and he has a different style than Rod Price. I think Rod was quite the master of slide guitar and although Cartwright is decent enough,he isn't in the same league as Price.

This is one of those transition albums - from rock more towards pop. There came in time in Foghat's career when their (what we now call) classic rock sound wasn't selling as much and this was one of the band's attempts at keeping up with the times and going a little more mainstream. It doesn't have that same driving, heavy beat of, say, Night Shift. It's still a good album, though it's upbeat, energetic, and fun but not as seriously rock 'n' roll as some of their previous albums.

"Live now, Pay Later" is a funny song, but a little monotonous sounding. My favorite tracks are probably "Second Childhood" and "Weekend Driver". "Sing about Love" is a fun one but a little odd. It's supposed to sound "live" with a crowd in the background, etc. but if you listen to he playing style, etc. it is clearly a studio track made to have some of the feel of a live track.

4.0 out of 5 stars new wavish and solid rock n roller., February 14, 2011

this one is better than 'tight shoes' it's less a boogie rocker though than their classic period from 72-79. However songs like 'live now pay later' are pretty darn good rock and roll songs. I wouldn't give 'zig zap walk' or 'tight shoes' this high of a rating because this one is just better than those. The band basically only did three cds in the 80's before breaking up, they returned a decade later though with the original band. But this one isn't too shabby, I think 70's fh fans should not be too unhappy with this one although it's not up to that level overall.

3.0 out of 5 stars Still some hits..., September 9, 2009

This was not the best thing Foghat ever did but there are a couple of standout songs that will remind any Foghat listener of the glory days of the band. Wide Boy is kind of a cheeky English 80's rock song that is a lot of fun, and Live Now Pay Later would fit right in on any of their bigger hit albums. There's some good stuff here, and if you're even a marginal Foghat fan you should buy it for those songs. I saw the current touring Foghat last night here in Denver with Charlie Huhn and Brian Basset. They put on a fantastic show, and I think they're even better than the original band. My only disappointment with their show was that they didn't play Wide Boy or Live Now Pay Later.......

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid Early '80s Rock, August 22, 2008
Maybe I was just at the right place at the right time, but this album takes me back. No, it's not Foghat's best overall, but "Let Me Get Close To You" and "Live Now -- Pay Later" are worth the price of the CD alone. Lonesome Dave had a great and expressive voice. My only real quibble with Foghat albums (for those of you who remember them) is that they tend to be a bit short, sometimes with only 7 or 8 tracks. Granted, the tracks are longer than most, but still... I am glad this band's music is finally making it into the digital age.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just as bad as "Tight Shoes", May 21, 2007
I won't repeat my review of "Tight Shoes", but this album was just as lousy. Those two albums, coming out in the very early 80's, took Foghat completely out of the category of popular rock bands, and into obscurity for the most part.

Don't waste your money on this bland bunch of music. Buy "Live" and "Stone Blue" for starters if you want to hear the REAL Foghat -- great music that rocks your socks off, with a hint of blues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cruisin' Music, June 30, 2006
This is my favorite of all Foghat records.Back in the 70's and 80's When the group was based on Long Island,New York,my sister had a good friend of hers that was the group's secretary. When this album came out in 1981 I was able to obtain a copy on cassette. This is all I played for at least a month.I finally wore the cassette out and now It finally comes out on Cd.My favorite tunes just happen to be the first song'"Wide Boy" and the last song,"Sing About Love".These songs keep you rockin'!!There is something mush different about this album compared to the rest of Foghat's collection.I think there is more maturity here. This is a great album!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another worthy disc!, January 9, 2007
This is the third of the late 70's and early 80's cd's of Foghat, and the last to have all killer songs on there. Another one I had on vinyl,I wore out the majority of the songs from repeated playings. My faveorite song on this disc is ''Live Now-Pay Later'',an ode to spent earnings BEFORE you even see the earnings. A definite should-have-been-a-top ten hit. Get this disc, you'll groove, rock and laugh.
