4.0 out of 5 stars A fun must-have for collectors!, April 21, 2004

If there were awards handed out for songs of the 60's (or any other era for that matter)categorized "So bad they're good", hands down winner in their class would have been "Egyptian Shumba" by The Tammys! Screaming, wailing and beat parts in it where you'd envision a "Nefertiti girl"- in a bikini, of course -chasing Harvey Lembeck all around the beach in one of his surf party movies! Rare Diane Renay and Donna Loren cuts, a little "Wall of Sound" , "Garage", "Bond-Girl" and of course the delightful Kane Triplets (who did the amusing "Pow-Pow-Pow!" on Ed Sullivan around that time) actually singing lyrics to "Mission Impossible" rounding out this eclectic but must-have for collectors! Also fun, colorful liner notes decorated with fashion images resembling "Betty" from "The Archies"!

3.0 out of 5 stars I've been zonked!, December 28, 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Girls Go Zonk: Us Beat Chicks & Harmony Honey (Audio CD)
Wild (and surprisingly cohesive) collection of girl group songs from that transitional period in the 1960's when heartbreak ballads were out and tough psychedelia was moving in. Donna Loren (Miss Dr. Pepper!) gets down with a one-minute-forty-two second hummer called "So, Do the Zonk". It's understandable if Capitol Records was unsuccessful in promoting such a short, seemingly insignificant tune (about an apparent dance craze which never happened), but Loren strikes a sultry vocal presence here, grittier than her records from those "Beach Party" years. "Chico's Girl" by The Girls sounds like an updated cousin to "Leader of the Pack" (and doesn't make much of an impression), yet "Daddy You Just Gotta Let Him In", treading similar thematic territory, is marvelously performed by the mysterious Satisfactions. Brian Wilson's pet project The Honeys have a great number, and Murmaids' "Paper Sun" is a nicely-updated variation of the squeaky-clean pop Kim Fowley helped them put out just a few years prior, though some artists didn't adjust to the new times quite as smoothly. Diane Renay sounds out of her element, and the blonde, beaming Kane Triplets tackle an impossible tune (the "Mission Impossible" theme--with lyrics!). Overall, a very enjoyable compilation, one with fairly good liner notes and photos representing a nearly-forgotten chapter in musical history that is never less than a pleasure revisiting. 'B'
