From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up—This volume is packed with ideas and suggestions for living green. Chapters describe the work of beauty entrepreneurs, animal-rights advocates, educators, artists, grocers, scientists, and engineers. Women and girls of various backgrounds share their stories of how they are making the world a better place, whether through recycling, creating usable lunch bags, writing blogs, or cleaning up beaches. Scattered throughout the book are vignettes or statements by celebrities such as Hayden Panettiere, Ellen Page, and Jessica Lowndes. Bright colors and copious photographs highlight the lively layout. The book concludes with suggestions for things readers can do to make the environment greener.—Patricia Ann Owens, Illinois Eastern Community Colleges

Format: Paperback
Girls and young women of all ages across the country have made important and lasting contributions to conserving natural resources, cleaning up the environment, and protecting vulnerable animals. Even as pre-teens, these environmental activists have worked hard and courageously to educate the public, influence policy, create new products, advocate for those without a voice, and develop innovative solutions to some of the most vexing problems that threaten planet earth.

Organized by types of activism, this book highlights the activities in which a number of pioneering young women have engaged to go green at the local and global levels. Added to the mix are some important lessons in economics about conserving natural resources, swaying consumer demand toward products that are both safer and more environmentally-friendly, and organizing into groups to influence policymakers and producers. Interspersed with stories from popular celebrities about their own environmental campaigns and illustrated with an abundance of eye-catching photographs and graphics, this volume should appeal to a wide readership.

One of the biggest impediments to getting involved with environmental campaigns is the sense of enormity of the problems we face - and the question: just what can one person do? Girls Gone Green answers this question, quite simply: lots. Young people, particularly, can have an enormous impact in the green movement, helping to launch--and lead--campaigns bringing our society into a new, green future.

Written in first-person, straight from the perspective of teens who've made an impact in their communities and nations, the book grabs the reader and lays out inspiration and ideas for teens that want to launch their own projects.

Highly recommended read! Buy it for the young people in your life, and see what ideas and passions emerge as a result...

It's not uncommon these days to hear about people going green, but what is out of the ordinary are the girls and young women profiled in the new book, Girls Gone Green. Author Lynn Hirshfield has put together a collection of stories that will inspire many to get involved in the movement to protect our environment. In these pages, we meet teens who are passionate about the cause, and are willing to put in long hours to enlighten and motivate others to become a voice for the planet. These young activists believe in the power they have to bring about change, and in a variety of ways, they all do their part. Many of the things these green girls are doing can be duplicated in our own neighborhoods in cities around the world. There are some great tips we can all learn from to be more eco friendly too! Girls Gone Green primarily focuses on the efforts of real green girls who are making a difference in their schools and communities, but we also hear from celebs like Alicia Silverston, Ellen Page and others who have gotten involved and share the details of their own journeys to raise awareness. This refreshing book is a terrific read for young and old, and if we are very lucky, it will be just the first in a series of stories meant to compel us all into taking action for the good of the world. Girls Gone Green and it's message of hope is one I highly recommend.
