4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - I bought it for my wife
I am a self defense instructor and i recently bought this book for my wife. It's advice is excellent and presented with humor and in a very accessible manor.

I disagree with the other reviewer who said that this is all stuff "we've heard before". It may seem like common sense stuff, but the problem with common sense is that it isn't too common.

In my classes...

I agree with the other "thumbs down" reviewers. This book is full of old info. and I detest its incessant cutesy girl talk demeanor. Frankly, I was shocked that Gavin de Becker endorsed this book. Safety Chick has great PR. That's the main thing I can say she has going for her, at least in terms of this book.

Moreover, taking a few self defense lessons from a self defense pro hardly qualifies one as an expert. Some of her information, particularly regarding self defense, is downright dangerous and shallow - clearly the mark of someone with little experience.

If you want good information on safety and self defense, read Sanford Strong's "Strong On Defense." I also recommend Gavin de Becker's book "The Gift of Fear." If you want to learn practical self defense and rape defense tactics for women, check out the Dr. Ruthless videos - Fierce and Female.

In my classes I encounter highly intelligent, educated, professional women who still jog alone at dusk wearing a walkman. I have spoken to countless women who own mace and keep it in their bedroom drawer where they will never get to it in time.

These women are not dumb, and this level of unpreparedness is not unique to females either. It's just that we are not used to thinking about, "what would i do if..." scenarios. This book makes you think about these things in a very non-threatening way.

If you get one thing out of this book, and that one thing eventually saves your life - how much would the book be worth then?

5.0 out of 5 stars The best, May 28, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Girl's Gotta Do What a Girl's Gotta Do (Paperback)
This book covers all the basics of women's safety. I am a woman that teaches self-defense seminars to women in local businesses in my area. I always recommend everyone to read this book. There are helpful resources in there for anyone. Not every word will pertain to every person. But if you just get one thing out of the book, then it was worth it. I read negative reviews of this book. For those people, you do not grasp the importance of safety. You are the ones that think "it can never happen to me."
Every woman should read this!

1.0 out of 5 stars SHE'S PRETTY - THE BOOK IS TERRIBLE!, November 17, 2003

This review is from: A Girl's Gotta Do What a Girl's Gotta Do (Paperback)
Bought the book and expected one thing and got another. Very disappointed in the fact that they used a pretty face, some respected opinions and used information to create a terrible book.

My first question was "Where is her expertise?" It's alarming knowing that anyone could put a book out and the press can hype it up and before you know it we have a female safety expert on a mission not to help but to make money.

Hopefully the author will take into account how people might take her serious and if some of her advise is not proven their harm will be on her head.

I loved Gavin DeBeckers work and Strong On Defense and one of the better books that recently came out is the Personal Protection Handbook by Tom Patire. All books writen by proven sources!

Very diasapointed to say the least!

Shirley

3.0 out of 5 stars Important Information For Young Girls, April 15, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Girl's Gotta Do What a Girl's Gotta Do (Paperback)
This book has a lot of important info for young girls however, if you read "The Gift of Fear" by Gavin deBecker, you will get all of this information plus many other important facts and tips. (He wrote the forward in this book). I have read "Gift of Fear twice, my daughter has read it 7 times and carries it with her all of the time (I have replaced it 4 times 'cause she wears it out). She can almost quote it verbatum. I think it is one of the most important books I have ever read and every woman should read it.... His 2 follow up books "Protecting the Gift" and "Fearless" are also a "MUST READ" but neither are as insightfull or as important to each of us as the "GIFT OF FEAR". Kathleen Baty has done a good job of alerting young women to the dangers that await all of us every day, but the book seemed to be a poorly condenced version of "Gift of Fear". Better than not reading either though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, Common Sense, February 3, 2007
By
A. Vegan (Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
The information, though brief, proves informative, e.g., five pages on self-defense aerosols like pepper sprays (how they work, foams vs. sprays, etc.) feature in the chapter on self-defense products. Other chapters are similarly broken into sections that contain tips for different realms, such as the home (draw the curtains) and work (have security escort you to your car). The advice is thoughtful and comprehensive, and while much is common sense, this book gathers it all in one place.
The information that is given is basically stuff I already knew. I guess you still have to read it to make sure, because there are still people who don't know some of these things. I think it would be a great book for girls age 13-25 to read. Good gift for girls starting High School & College.

5.0 out of 5 stars The modern gal's survivor guide, December 15, 2008
This review is from: A Girl's Gotta Do What a Girl's Gotta Do (Paperback)
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book! The author speaks to the modern woman and addresses everything we should be concerned about, from parking lots to online shopping. She gives tons of valuable information that will save your life. It is the best safety book I've read.

BUY THIS FOR EVERY WOMAN YOU KNOW!! I have just sent a copy to my college age daughter, and am going to get more for her friends. Kathleen Baty has written a very humorous and informative book, full of interesting facts and advice. I am inspired that she has created such a positive book after enduring 20 years of staulking, Bravo! This book is what every woman needs to know, presented in an un-scary or preachy manner.

I bought this book after reading about it in TIME mag. I think it is a must-read for all women. The smarter the woman, the less likely an attack. Buy for all the women you know! Go chicks!

By A Customer
This review is from: A Girl's Gotta Do What a Girl's Gotta Do (Paperback)
I bought this book after reading about it in People Magazine and was very disappointed. I was buying the book to hopefully learn something new about safety, and all of the information provided in the book was old news. I would not recommend this book to anyone who is seriously looking for new safety tips.
