4.0 out of 5 stars Good Reading -Especially for Young Professionals, April 21, 2003
By
(The word "girls'" in the title is misleading, since this book is for women.) I found this book enlightening and helpful, especially for younger women just beginning their careers. Each chapter was inspirational, and encouraged me to be an informed, powerful, and successful woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Telling It Like It Really Is, June 14, 2001
This review is from: The Girls' Guide to Power and Success (Hardcover)
After years of suffering from subtle discrimination (and feeling guilty because my instincts told me it was happening, but my socialized conscience said, "Shame on you for even thinking it!"), how refreshing it is to find a young author willing to not only admit gender discrimination occurs, but gives concrete suggestions for combatting the disease.

The writing is easy to read, gives specific examples (which I compared to my own experiences with eye-opening results)and is thought-provoking, to say the least. I recommend this book for any woman who has experienced gender discrimination -- it will help you cope more effectively, with positive results both career-wise and personally.

More importantly, I recommend this book to any woman who thinks she has not been discriminated against because of her gender. Chances are, she is inadvertently championing the discrimination cause. As Ms. Solovic points out, in many ways, women are their own worst enemies. It's time we recognized it, and work together to stop it.

I added this book to my company library, and made it recommended reading for every manager (male and female) in my organization.

This should be displayed next to "What They Didn't Teach You At Harvard Business School." It's an absolute primer for corporate survival and success. Planning a strategy for climbing the corporate ladder is an essential that most women overlook...one can't simply move along aimlessly and expect to rise to the top. This book is a companion to the journey...an older sister's road map. Any young woman will benefit from Solovic's advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Useful And Provocative Book, May 9, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Girls' Guide to Power and Success (Hardcover)
Susan Wilson Solovic has written a very useful and often provocative book for working women of all ages. Unlike some "career guides" that focus only on statistics and theory, Ms. Solovic interviewed successful women who have been "in the trenches" of the business world in addition to using great examples from her own varied and successful career. This approach not only makes the book a "good read" but it provides "nuts and bolts" practical advice on how women can be more effective in the business world today. This book was written from a unique point of view by a woman "who's done it all" and who now wants to make the road a bit smoother for other women in business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Up Front, Personal, and Honest, June 12, 2001
This review is from: The Girls' Guide to Power and Success (Hardcover)
Solovic took a hard look at why successful women have "made it" and then took the time to share it with the rest of us! Her examination of corporate America is "closer to reality" than many of us want to admit. Even those of us who work for the "best companies" know that we face additional challenges as women executives. Here's an opportunity to read, learn and apply her insights to our daily lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!, September 5, 2001
This review is from: The Girls' Guide to Power and Success (Hardcover)
Author and consultant Susan Wilson Solovic tells how working women can be more effective in top positions and move up the career ladder. She highlights the differences between male and female styles and cites ways that women often sabotage themselves by showing weakness and a lack of confidence in how they speak and act. Using examples and diverse quotes, she illustrates what women should do to express the power they have, which is the key to being taken seriously as a leader. Solovic challenges many overly optimistic beliefs about how things have changed for women in the U.S. workforce and backs up her assertions with recent statistics and research. We [...] highly recommend this book, which provides a welcome strategic reminder that is clearly directed toward businesswomen - though why call them girls? Oh, that's a little irony from the author or, at least we hope so.
