5.0 out of 5 stars A Luminous Tribute To Girls And Women Everywhere
"We are sisters of this Earth-members of one powerful tribe. Every color, age, and size, we're united by beauty inside." With girls comparing everything about themselves to others - and often forced to take a back seat to boys - books like this one are a treat. Author Jada Pinkett Smith celebrates women's diversity as well as our unity. We are magnificent, the author...

3.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting, beautifully illustrated...but one it's lacking one thing...
I was extremely excited to order Jada Pinkett-Smith's new book for my 3-year old daughter. I read the book to her, happily pointing out all the beautiful young women and sharing the uplifting messages. However, one thing was missing....there weren't any young girls with dark complexions. We are magnificent, the author seems to be saying, each and every one of us. It's a thoroughly inclusive book; women and girls of all ages and ethnic backgrounds are lovingly photographed here. Delightful photographs illuminate the author's lovely, lyrical poem and show the many faces of girlish and womanly beauty. The effervescence of one cartwheel-performing child is simply delightful.

This is a book about warmth, caring, love, and the strength we get from female friends and family members. It's perfect for mothers and daughters to read together, and for girlfriends to share.

But it's not just a feel-good book. Feeling good about ourselves also takes effort: "We girls hold up this world as we build our self-esteem. We know that discipline will turn a princess into a queen."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great message for girls, April 17, 2005
This review is from: Girls Hold Up This World (Hardcover)
Jada Pinkett-Smith is a terrific role model for girls. She is accomplished in her professional and personal life. Her book is another testimony to her great attitude for girls to follow. Any book that aims to help girls feel better about themselves and to stand up for themselves is commendable.

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty good, April 1, 2005

This review is from: Girls Hold Up This World (Hardcover)
I found this book to be pretty good indeed, Nothing like a book to make one feel worth while, a truly feel good about yourself book, I would recommend this book to many females that just don`t have the self esteem that they should have, FOR WE ARE ALL WONDERFUL PEOPLE.

A recommendation from my point of view:
Poetry that holds, Stories untold,
Another wonderful book, that I would recommend to any and everyone!

I was extremely excited to order Jada Pinkett-Smith's new book for my 3-year old daughter. I read the book to her, happily pointing out all the beautiful young women and sharing the uplifting messages. However, one thing was missing....there weren't any young girls with dark complexions. My daughter is a chocolate brown color, and there was no girl in the book that shared her color... one was close. Our race is made up of a variety of hues; however, this really wasn't depicted in the book. I know it may seem a bit insignificant to some for me to comment on this, but unfortunately, it is still an issue in our society, especially our race.

I do like the book because it features our girls so well; however, I wish it would've had more of our chocolate colored girls. They need to know that they are beautiful too.

5.0 out of 5 stars We ARE a FAMILY!, December 21, 2005
This review is from: Girls Hold Up This World (Hardcover)
The reveiwer who couldn't get beyond photographic technical issues (of which there are none) missed the whole purpose of the book: we "girls" must hold each other up as we hold up the world." The poem would have been swallowed up and ignored if there were slick, Madison Avenue, glossy (and seemingly staged) photographs. There is nothing that will help more in building and fostering self-esteem than little girls seeing reflections that resemble them. It's just a wonderful book to give to the mother of the newly-born baby girl...or the Diva girlfriend who has just finished her Master's program.

5.0 out of 5 stars An ideal discussion kickoff, October 16, 2005
This review is from: Girls Hold Up This World (Hardcover)
This book is excellent for a broad range of readers. Even though it is in the format of a children's book, the content is a perfect starting point for a thought-provoking conversation about identity, equality, self-esteem, and empowerment for all ages, ethnic groups, and sexes. While the focus is on girls, the lessons are just as important for boys. The appreciation for, and understanding of the book's ideas are easily adopted to the level of the reader.

This is a wonderful little book. I bought it for my daughter-in-law to read and share the wisdom in it with my granddaughters.
Little girls should grow up feeling important in their family, community and world.

1.0 out of 5 stars No Rainbow Here!, October 14, 2006
This review is from: Girls Hold Up This World (Hardcover)
I was very disappointed in this book. My little one asked me why were there not any dark girls in it? I told her I did not know why. But being an a dark skinned black woman, I know why. Yes, you better believe small children take note of this disparity in our race.

I bought this book for my granddaughter, who is 10 years old. She cherishes it and read the whole thing herself the day she received it in the mail. Thanks so much!
