This book is really informative! Going throught life as a girl isn't easy! This book really helped me out during that time period. It discusses subjects from "All That" to Zits! It's a great book with a lot of helpful hints.

**One word - WOW!**,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Girls' Life Guide to Growing Up (The Girls' Life Series) (Paperback)
I had wanted this book for as long as I could remember - when I got the book, all I could think was "WOW!" it goes everywhere from what to do when your body starts changing - to how to deal when a loved one or friend dies. If you are (or know of) any special Pre-teen girls in your life, this is the PERFECT reference book for them! They will find themselves referring to it over and over, and sometimes just reading it to see the comments other girls wrote in. If you like Girls' Life Magazine - you'll love The Girls' Life Guide to Growing Up!

I first ordered a copy of this for my daughter when she was 9. She didn't actually get into it until she was about 10, but I have noticed her going back to that book over and over again. She asks questions, and it has opened up the way for a lot of discussion. Everything is in it from manners to clothes to making new friends to schoolwork and bras. It's all in a neat organized manner and written so it's easily understood and followed. I bought another copy for a friend's daughter, too.

I got this book for my 11-year-old daughter, but I am thankful I looked through it carefully first before giving it to her (and I decided NOT to). The description of the book here reflects 7th-grade and up, which in my mind is still questionable after looking through the content. Although not much would be totally shocking to a girl that age, the way the book is written seems to almost encourage a lot of the bad behaviour that you see in young girls now.
The book has 3 main sections: FRIENDS, FAMILY, and CRUSHES. The Friends section talks about why a good friend "covers for you when you're late for class, looks out for hunky guys, and keeps the dirt from your past a secret." Dirt from your past?! Isn't this a book for young girls? This chapter also has quizzes where you rate whether your friend would lie for you to escape grounding, and whether her dream guy might be a harley-riding leather biker or an Audi owner with a gold card. Forgive me, but I really don't think this is the kind of nonsense that we should be providing to young girls as reference. The Family section covers siblings, divorce, remarriage, stepparents, and Mom-issues and Dad-issues (including a comic of a girl asking her newspaper-reading Dad whether he thinks she should pierce her nose or her navel). There's a section here about "coming clean to your parents," which tells a tale of girl who has shoplifted and her "dilemma" about whether she has to tell her parents! There are a lot of pages here dedicated to navigating the waters of the broken home, but not much for the girl still living with her happily-married biological parents. The Crush section includes testimonials from girls talking about the crushes they had when they were 11-12-13 or so: on older boys, teachers, and even the husband of a family they babysat. That's followed by a ream of paper on dating and boyfriends. Don't get me wrong, there are some legitimate bits of info here and there ("You don't have to date until you're ready," "Keep true to your values no matter what others are doing," and so on), but it's completely overpowered by all of the mindless, superficial dreck. In addition, the 'style' of the writing is very much like a 13-year-old sitting around talking on the phone (or texting, probably). The topics are more suitable for older girls, but the style is clearly aimed at young girls---not good either way. Another reviewer of the "Girl's Life" MAGAZINE said similar things about the content there; and since this book is from that group it's pretty much the same. You might go to that product line and see a few more content reviews before purchasing this one, especially for a younger girl.

Pertinent Information for adolescent girls.,
By Chris Stro (Bridgeport, CT United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Girls' Life Guide to Growing Up (The Girls' Life Series) (Paperback)
I bought this book for both of my girls, one age 10 and the other age 12. They have had the book for over a year now. When they received the books, I thumbed through to share with them some passages that I found useful. After that, they began to read the book and use it as a reference source for those times they needed answers to and didn't want to ask ol' Mom. Often we discuss their findings and they seem confident in the knowledge that they have learned. This book is an excellent addition to any adolescent girl's parents toolbox. It has been a wonderful resource for us and has served as a foundation for many discussions.

THis book was told to us by a friend. It was so good that not only our daughter read it but our boys. I then got a boy's version. Things covered in there make it perfect for parents to talk/read and listen about. Wonderful!
