Book Description

March 12, 1999
We all have moments from childhood that were turning points -- people and events that molded our perceptions of ourselves and our lives. In Girls Like Us, 40 accomplished, influential women share these inspiring moments from their own childhoods and teenage years. Novelist Amy Tan explores the life of a young girl and her relationship to her mother in The Joy Luck Club; Faye Wattleton describes how a checkered and difficult childhood shaped her into the determined leader she is today; In Paula, Isabel Allende tells of her parents' priceless gift in encouraging her to express her creativity. The book also includes photographs of some of the contributors at the age they appear in their stories, as well as brief biographies of each.

4.0 out of 5 stars A collection that connected me with the girl I was., June 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Girls Like Us: Forty Extraordinary Women Celebrate Girlhood in Story, Poetry, and Song (Paperback)
A wonderful collection of stories poems and essays that took me back to my own girlhood and reminded me that at some level, we are all the same. I relived my clumsy, awkward, shy, loveable, ebullient self in adolescence through the brave writings of these women. I was moved to tears by the redrawing, through these stories, of the very oppressive, prejudiced world that existed during my growing up time and place and its effect on "girls like us." Thanks to editor Gina Misiroglu for her sensitivity, good taste and good humor in bringing this collection together. P.S. I loved the photographs that accompanied some of the pieces.

MY book review is as follows. I found this book to be both interesting and informative. It gave me a lot of insight on the different writers experiences, adventures and opinions on many different subjects. I really liked the way the stories were put together. They made me feel good things about being a girl and also told me of things to be aware of. Most of all It is going to be a book that I will read again from time to time, kind of like a handbook for living.I reccomend other people to read this book, It might help them out with there problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend it...it's really all of us...growing up., May 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Girls Like Us: Forty Extraordinary Women Celebrate Girlhood in Story, Poetry, and Song (Paperback)
I am a 74-year old grandmother who bought this for my daughter (who has 2 small children of her own) for Mother's Day. Since we have shared our books, giving many back and forth to read and discuss, I read the book before putting it in its special gift paper and had a wonderful time! I laughed, I cried, I had a big nostalgia trip - my daughter's girlhood, my own, and even what I remembered of my own immigrant mother's tales of her girlhood - all came flooding back to me as I learned both the universal & the special things about our girlhoods. This will now become a treasure for my grand-daughter, who is only 5 now, but who will grow into this lovely volume. I highly recommend it - not only for the women in your life, but as a peek into the past for the special men you know and love. After all, you've had to hear for years about their coming of age - from Little League to college beer parties - so this book is a chance for them to learn about the women they care for. It is really all of us - growing up, living, learning and loving.
