Book Description

May 1, 2012 8 and up Best at Everything580L (What's this?)
A new graphic novel from the team that brought you the NEW YORK TIMES bestselling Best at Everything series!

Unlike those other books for girls that are a little too daring, GIRLS ONLY: HOW TO SURVIVE ANYTHING is the perfect guide. In addition to the mix of humor and helpfulness, the fresh graphic style of art makes this book stand out from all the others. With practical, funny, and sometimes ridiculous how-tos (like how to deal with a clothes crisis, teach your cat to sit, and spot an alien in your family) girls are going to love getting prepared for just about anything!

1.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Sexist June 8, 2012
By A.M
While the "Boys Only" counterpart to this book provides all kinds of interesting tips to actually surviving real dangers, like "How to Survive a Snakebite" and "How to Survive a Whiteout," the "Girls Only" book offers such tantalizing survival tips as "How to Teach Your Cat to Sit," "How to Pick the Perfect Sunglasses," and "How to Spot a Frenemy."

Is the message here that the author doesn't want girls to survive in dangerous situations, or what? It boggles my mind that this was written by a woman. And illustrated by the woman who does Thea Stilton! Maybe I haven't looked at those books closely enough, but I'm pretty sure none of the Thea Sisters have solved a mystery by picking the perfect sunglasses.

I hope everyone involved takes a hard look at this book and themselves. Just awful. Please do the young women in your life the respect of steering clear of this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Published in the Year 2012 June 8, 2012
By p.m.
I'll be honest, I didn't even have to read this book or it's 'Boys Only' counterpart to be easily alerted by a considerate blogger as to some of the utterly degrading iniquities between the two. Featuring such wonderfully practical advice as "How to Teach Your Cat to Sit" and "How to Survive a Breakout" as compared to the Boys version's "How to Survive a Shark Attack," "How to Survive in the Desert" and so on... Two decades ago, this kind of thinking was already a comedy of sexist idiocy from a fading era. That it still crops up in such blatant ways, presented so mindlessly to kids, proves that that era is not nearly as far behind us as it should be. Shame on this.

1.0 out of 5 stars Check out Nat Geo's version June 11, 2012
Whoever green lit this project is clearly living in a different decade. Check out Nat Geo's product by the same title that predated this book by over a year. It combines all of the ideas for both sexes, and gets it 100% right.
