Book Description

10 and up5 and up

Looking for some words of wisdom? for girls only is here to help with tips, advice, and tons of fun, clever quotes about friends, family, school, life, and love.

Carol Weston, advice columnist, novelist, and best-selling author of girltalk, adds her own spin to over five hundred carefully chosen quotations. You'll find insight and inspiration in the words of Socrates and Seinfeld, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Latifah, Mark Twain and Halle Berry -- and in proverbs and quotations from around the world and throughout history that are still perfect for here and now.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-A collection of inspirational thoughts divided into topics such as friendship, love, and family. Each one-page narrative begins with an italicized quote and concludes with an italicized pithy thought. Voices heard in the opening quotes range from Aesop and Socrates to Oscar Wilde, E.B. White, Susan B. Anthony, Madonna, and Oprah Winfrey. There is no identification of these quotable notables, most of which are recognizable names, but some, such as Piet Hein, may by unknown to adolescent readers. The last eight pages, blank save for a short italicized quote at the bottom, are reserved for doodling or notes. This is not meant to be a cover-to-cover read, but a flip-and-search text (since there is no index) when looking for just the right words, inspiration, advice, or solace. Although the quotes and text speak to girls, some may find them cloying. However, the enticing cover, the page borders, and the brevity of the selections lend appeal. A supplemental purchase.

From Booklist

Gr. 6-9. Weston, author of Girltalk (1988) and For Teens Only (2002), updates her 1998 book that gathered hundreds of quotes from sources as diverse as Socrates, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Oprah. Here, she adds quotes from current stars, including Tiny Fey and Mia Hamm. The passages reassure adolescent girls on familiar topics such as friendship, love, family, school, and work. Her one-page advice format, which begins with a famous quote and ends with a Weston one-sentence pearl, makes for easy, focused reading and discussion. Although the advice is traditional, this revision offers an appealing format for self-help and might be used to introduce quotation collecting to a new group of impressionable teens. Frances Bradburn

More About the Author

Carol Weston writes for kids, teens, and grown-ups and has been the advice columnist at Girls' Life for 15 years. Newsweek calls her a "Teen Dear Abby," and Parenting says, "Carol Weston gets girls." The daughter of writers, Carol went to high school in Armonk (BHHS) and France (SYA). At Yale, she studied comp lit, graduating summa cum laude. In Madrid, Spain, she got an M.A. from Middlebury--and met her husband, playwright Rob Ackerman.

Her first book, GIRLTALK: All the Stuff Your Sister Never Told You (HarperCollins), has been translated into ten languages and in print since 1985. Now in a fully updated fourth edition, it's as sensible, encouraging, and "outstanding" (School Library Journal) as ever.

Carol loves being a guru for girls, but uh oh, she'd always meant to write fiction! Finally she gave herself some advice: Do it! In 2000, Knopf published The Diary of Melanie Martin, a funny novel about a traveling girl and her brother Matt the Brat. (Psst, their art teacher mom doesn't know that the kids' favorite museum game is Point Out the Naked People.)

What else? Carol and Rob live in Manhattan with two daughters and one cat. Her birthday is September 11, and she likes Boggle, Hearts, Bananagrams, skiing, walking, art museums, foreign films, dark chocolate, and good books. She thanks you for ordering her books and invites you to visit carolweston.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars TOTALLY INSPIRING!!!, August 6, 2004
This review is from: For Girls Only: Wise Words, Good Advice (Paperback)
I love how this book is full of excellent advice that I can read whenever I'm feeling confused or depressed. I am a big fan of Carol Weston's "Dear Carol" column in Girls' Life magazine (and also of her novels) so it's really cool to have her best advice in one book. She also quotes a ton of my favorite musicians, actors, and other writers. Basically, thanks to FOR GIRLS ONLY, even if I've already talked to my mom and best friend about a problem, I still have another place to go for good advice or just to get me motivated to get my work done or try to meet new people or whatever. FOR GIRLS ONLY is FOR YOU!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Moms and Dads must use this book, April 7, 1999
By A Customer
This beautifully written book is never too far from my daughter's bedside. Except when I have it! It's chalk full of practical advice and ispirational ideas. If you read it through, I guarantee you'll feel uplifted and empowered to tackle the world. My 10 year old turns to this book to browse when she's in between novels or when she needs specific advice. When friends are over, they pore over the "love" and "friendship" chapters, and it has saved her on homework assignments requiring quotes! She especially loves the blank pages at the end of the book where she is moved to record her own pearls of wisdom. I love that she'll look back at them someday. What a treasure! ATTENTION MOMS AND DADS! If you need help for that crucial, life changing pep talk - USE THIS BOOK! It's an invaluable tool for finding the right words for boosting a low self esteem moment, getting over a homework hump, managing an allowance crisis, or enriching a positive experience.
