A Campy Mess, September 27, 2008

A fan of the TV program, I was intrigued to see how this would translate to the stage. It didn't. The show closed very quickly because, IMHO, it suffered from a lack of identity -- it didn't know what it wanted to be. A dark version of prison life as portrayed on the telly or a campy "Brady Bunch Movie" sort of satire. It was neither, and this is painfully reflected in the music. A cheesy horn section and terrible arrangements make a mess of many of the tunes. Some songs are pleasant enough, a few have the power to move, but overall this is probably a CD for the curious only.
