Book Description

8 and up3 and up
In most fairy stories and folk tales, the girl waits around for a prince to rescue her. But, in this collection of stories from cultures around the world, courageous, clever and determined girls are too busy saving the day to wait around for Prince Charming.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-A collection of stories about resourceful young women, written to offset the helplessness of traditional folktale heroines. Most are original tales that incorporate folkloric elements. In Lansky's own "The Fairy Godmother's Assistant," a young woman advises Cinder-Ella to sew her own ball gown. She goes on to council a king and arbitrate a royal dispute, relying on her own wits and common sense. "Grandma Rosa's Bowl," based on an old diary discovered in an antique store in Mexico, is about a girl whose wisdom and sensitivity help her settle a painful family feud. The stories are set in a variety of countries, but occasionally a sincere desire to represent many cultures seems lacking. For example, in Vivian Van de Velde's "Lian and the Unicorn," the unicorn seems to have been plunked down in China simply to fulfill some vague multicultural requirement. Nevertheless, most of these stories are fast paced and humorous. Readers who enjoyed Robert Munsch's The Paper Bag Princess (Firefly, 1980) but aren't yet ready for Jack Zipes's immortal Don't Bet on the Prince (Routledge, 1986) will enjoy them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cinderella watch out!!!, November 4, 1997
By A Customer
This book is for every girl who, just once, would like to see the prince trapped in the tower and the princess slay the dragon. "Girls to the Rescue" is a collection of ten fairytales- all with strong, courageous, adventurous girls as the focus. Some of the tales are re-writes of classic tales (but with girls doing the rescuing instead of waiting to be rescued) while others are new, bold tales never before encountered. All make for good read alouds- short, to the point, and often quite comical. For every woman who wants her daughter to see that girls can do more than scrub floors for a wicked stepmother and try on glass slippers, this book is a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Look, I see a great book!, December 13, 1999
By A Customer
The book was rather inspiring to me. However, I do recommend this book to fifth and sixth graders. I really like how the the girls are rescurers in this book, because almost in all books the men are the rescurers and I just hate it. Don't you? Bruce Lansky is my favorite author. So I hope that my review really helps you.
