nicely written collection with an emphasis on cleverness rather than cleaving... the preface and dedication are also good reading... a good and entertaining book but not with anything exactly cutting edge or terribly unique... This review is from: Girls To The Rescue 1: Folk Tales From Around The World (Paperback)
This book is for every girl who, just once, would like to see the prince trapped in the tower and the princess slay the dragon. "Girls to the Rescue" is a collection of ten fairytales- all with strong, courageous, adventurous girls as the focus. Some of the tales are re-writes of classic tales (but with girls doing the rescuing instead of waiting to be rescued) while others are new, bold tales never before encountered. All make for good read alouds- short, to the point, and often quite comical. For every woman who wants her daughter to see that girls can do more than scrub floors for a wicked stepmother and try on glass slippers, this book is a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Look, I see a great book!, December 13, 1999

The book was rather inspiring to me. However, I do recommend this book to fifth and sixth graders. I really like how the the girls are rescurers in this book, because almost in all books the men are the rescurers and I just hate it. Don't you? Bruce Lansky is my favorite author. So I hope that my review really helps you.

This book was SO COOL!!! My favorite story was either The Fairy Godmother's Assistant, For Love of Sunny, The Royal Joust, orLian and the Unicorn. But ALL of the stories were awsome; I loved them all! Keep writing/editing, Bruce Lansky!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Looking to spark your reluctant reader?, October 17, 2001

This book inspired a love of reading in my second grader. She ranked reading right up there with going to the dentist (no offense), until she got her hands on this book. The short, captivating stories seemed to fascinate her, and she begged me to order the rest of the series. I hope Bruce Lansky keeps up the good work!

I liked The Fairy Godmother's Assistant and [name] And The Ogre the best... the closer about Sheherazade had little to offer beyond introducing those who may not know to her existence. there is a linked table of contents in the kindle edition but you have to page back from the beginning to find it. very well formatted with no errors that I recall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, May 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My daughters (age 7 and 10) were hooked after the first story. Every night at bedtime they asked for more. I tried reading them another book one night, and a few pages into it they asked me to read "Girls to the Rescue" instead. It is not a short book, but I wish it were 1000 pages so we could keep reading more. The stories are varied and well written. I expect that after some time has gone by I can read it to them again.

I would pay for a children's book if I were told it was as good as this one; that's the highest praise a cheapskate like me can give.

4.0 out of 5 stars My daughter's review, June 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'm typing, but the review is all my 3rd grader 9-year-old...

I liked that it was about the girls and they were doing the right thing and taking charge and not being the annoying ones. My favorite story was the Fairy Godmother's Assistant because it was about the fairy godmother's assistant helping people without any magic. The book wasn't too easy for me to read, but not too hard - it was just the right level. I also liked the story Royal Joust because the boy named Reggie got sick and couldn't do the jousting thing so his sister Lindsay disguised herself as him and won the trophy. She outsmarted 3 other talented jousters. I recommend that all girls my age should read this book because I liked it a lot.

Adult now: My daughter loved this book, read it very quickly and immediately asked for Book 2. She was even willing to do some work this afternoon to earn the 2nd book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, strong female stories!, March 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book had a nice collection of good stories that feature girls/women as the heroes and main characters. A few stories had odd writing styles, but I suspect that they would sound better read aloud like most children's books.

The only story I had a problem with was the retelling of The Arabian Nights, but that's just because I hate "cleaned-up" versions of fairy tales and thought the beheadings could have been left in. Most kids (yes even girls!) would rather hear about peoples heads getting chopped off anyways.
