SOLID "GIRL'S SCENE" FROM ENGLAND, April 8, 2011
This review is from: The Girl's Scene (Audio CD)
62 minutes of music. The original analogue tapes have been digitally remastered for clean, sharp sound. The booklet contains an introduction to female ("girl") singers in England, with track by track information-in depth-on each artist.
These tracks, from the 60's, all recorded for the Decca label give an idea of what people heard on the radio as far as girl singers/groups. With full arrangements and vocals running the gamut from innocent to fairly tough (for pop music), this collection goes beyond mere curiosity.
The vast number of artists here will be new to most people. But also included are songs by Lulu, Olivia Newton-John (her first recording in 1966), Marianne Faithful, and Vashti (Bunyan-who released a couple of good folk albums), with some listeners possibly familiar with The Vernons Girls. A few of the artists were Joe Meek discoveries, and a few were pushed along by Andrew Loog Oldham. The track by Bobbie Miller was produced by Bill Wyman (THE ROLLING STONES). Another group, the all girl MYSTERIES let loose with a female version of British Beat, and they still remain unknown, with their few singles highly prized by collectors. Another curiosity, Adrienne Poster sings the song "Shang a Doo Lang", a Jagger-Richards (ROLLING STONES) composition.
The subject matter is romance-finding/losing love, unattainable love, etc. A number of these tracks would've fit easily on U.S. radio of the time. But the pleasant surprise is that this collection is so listenable. As I said, if you're a fan of 60's girl groups from the U.S., this set can sit easily alongside collections of U.S. artists. Of the eight volumes available in this series, ("Decca Originals"), this is one of the more coherent, solid, and enjoyable sets. And now at a low price, this is well worth picking up if your tastes run towards this style of music. And even if you're not sure-this collection might make you a believer.

The Girls' Scene: a must-have, August 19, 2011
This review is from: The Girl's Scene (Audio CD)
If you're a fan of 60's music at all you need to own this comp! More beat & mod than soul. The comp has some fairly unfamiliar songs/artists as well, so it's definitely worth it. It's hard enough to find the recordings of female artists, let alone those from the 60's. Like the other "Scene" comps I've heard, this one also doesn't disappoint.
