The queen of Lubbock, August 3, 2010
This review is from: Bad Girls Upset By The Truth (Audio CD)
Of all the great Lubbock, Texas, songwriters in the generation that produced Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, the most distinctive and least known is Jo Carol Pierce. This CD is her masterpiece, and it really is a masterpiece: a one-hour, one-woman musical comedy that cuts to the heart of all sorts of modern malaise and small-town quirkyness and christianity and sex and love and Texas and a whole lot else.
I was a music critic for the Boston Globe when this came out, and put it on my annual top ten list, but nobody much listened to me and it remains a much-overlooked gem... someday I hope somebody important will scream about it from the housetops and it will get the recognition it deserves. For now, just buy it, and buy more copies for your friends--neither you nor they will be disappointed.

~ It'll save your sanity. Guaranteed! ~, November 9, 2004
This review is from: Bad Girls Upset By The Truth (Audio CD)
This CD is a work of singular genius (even though there are lots of other interesting folks working along with Jo Carol). I love hearing the sound of people from Lubbock, Texas (I dedicate one day per year -- me, a native New Yorker, as -- "Tawk lahk a Tixin" day. And no way you want to go around sounding like dubya! You want to sound like, well, folks like Jo Carol or Terry Allen or Ned Sublette. I even named my viola STEVE, if you catch my drift! Hey, if you're having a tough day or have hit a rough patch in your life, this album will hold you in good stead. It is a masterpiece and much, much cheaper than months of counseling. :)
