5.0 out of 5 stars A lost classic, July 5, 2009
I read this book as a third or fourth grader and I adored it. It's a wonderful book for Jewish families as it tells the story of a Jewish family, perhaps Sephardic, in Palestine in the early part of the 20th century. We don't always remember that there were Jews in that part of the world before the founding of the land of Israel. The family is composed of several sisters (I'm doing this from memory), who live with their widowed mother, and often visit their childless and fun aunt. Their older brother has emigrated to America to seek his fortune and his letters have stopped coming. The girls set out to track their lost brother down. A fun and interesting read for girls interested in the Jewish diaspora and historical fiction.
