5.0 out of 5 stars Tasteful vintage Lesbo porn
This collection of Lesbo erotica from the 60's and early 70's is for those who like a bit a few arty touches and tasteful restraint in their porn. The almost total absence of men is also a bonus (I think there should be a campaign for the abolition of men in porn!). Most of the women are beautiful (OK, a couple of spaniels have somehow sneaked in), and there is a welcome...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but...
This is a DVD of short film clips throughout the years with commentary. More like a documentary than a dvd of short films. Although not what I expected, it was interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Girl-girl from the `60's? Very captivating, January 21, 2007

This is a movie I've had for years - without truly realizing what it was.

It was only after I had begun to collect all of Radley Metzger's pioneering lesbian movies from the `60's did I truly appreciate this video, "Girls Who Like Girls," from Audubon films.

From the cover, this movie looks to be just a compilation of "The Steamiest Lesbian Scenes from Radley Metzger . . ." But it's not!

It is actually a very well done documentary - of Mr. Metzger's movies and others - that was written and narrated by Pauline Edwards who, with her very young and feminine sounding voice - made this film as informative as it was entertaining.

It's important to point out - that these are not selected vignettes from the pornographic movies of the `60's. These are, in fact -- the honest-to-goodness sex scenes -- from the earliest mainstream (in theater) movies that featured women making love to women.

When looked at from today's perspective (which is how I originally viewed this film) - the sexual (and emotional) content is very tame and indirect.

But when viewed from a 1960's perspective (which Ms. Edwards provides) - when the depiction of two women making love (or even being "in love") was unheard of - one finally begins to understand how earth shattering these films must've been, (especially for the repressed bi-curious women of the era, poor babies!).

All of the "virgin" heroines are straight (or at least start out as such), and most of them have their women-only side revealed to them by typically older - but definitely more experienced - partners.

In the earlier works, the "teachers" have an androgynous appearance (and sometimes dress like men). It isn't until the later films (which include Mr. Metzger's) that both partners are allowed to take on a very feminine persona. The outtakes thus become sexier and more attractive over time - which helps to keep our attention riveted until the movie's end.

Of the films highlighted, my two favorite were easily Mr. Metzger's, "The Alley Cats" (where the actresses are gorgeous, one of whom looks like `Ginger' from "Gilligan's Island") and his classic love story, "Therese and Isabelle," which was based on the true life writings of a French author, Violette Leduc, whose autobiographical prose was actually used as a poetic first person description of the sex - as it was taking place (but shown only indirectly) on film.

Being foreign, many of the films don't shy away from cunnilingus - where the women (hilariously, by today's standards) pose, usually by a knee or two - before going down. And there's also a satisfying amount of nudity - and toplessness - which would've both been lacking had these all been American releases.

Viewers from later generations may also be surprised to discover - that the breasts (fully shown) on many of the women were just as beautiful then as they are today, if not more so -- especially since all of them were all-natural (no implants)!

Of note, in Metzger's, "Dirty Girls," there is also one particularly interesting scene where a very seductive blonde makes love to her own image in a mirror which, as Ms. Edwards tells us, was one of the earliest depictions of female masturbation on film. (Heady stuff, huh?)

As a married woman (who is also a bit bisexual), what makes these films particularly satisfying for me - is that they depict heterosexual women (rather than true lesbians) discovering themselves - which is a topic as sexy for both men and women today as it was nearly forty years ago!

"Girls Who Like Girls" is a wonderful documentary that gives us a very enlightened look at where we came from! (Gee, I can't wait to see what the next forty years will bring.) Please don't miss out!
