From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up-A collection of essays, stories, and poetry about being female. Chapter themes include body image and self-esteem, friendships, mother-daughter relationships, menstruation, and sexuality. The contributors, girls and women identified by their first names and ages, relate their experiences and thoughts. Feelings, physical and emotional development, parents, boyfriends, stress, food, and a host of other topics are explored. Though not a literal guide to puberty, the book speaks about the possible paths a girl's life can take and how she can express herself as a female, and offers readers a warm and confidential source to turn to for support. The quality of writing is not consistent and occasionally the inclusion of an older woman's experience seems too sophisticated for the intended audience. However, this combination of practical advice, personal history, and creative writing will appeal to a variety of readers.
