3.0 out of 5 stars Satirical novel with a shocker of a twist!, April 22, 2011
This review is from: A Girl's guide to Kissing Frogs (Paperback)
This book started off wonderfully. The characters were well written, beautiful to see, and the situations believable.

You've got a beautiful dancer, Marigold, who is on her way up to becoming a principal ballerina, and who is sleeping with the director of the ballet to stay that way, when an injury sidelines her and sends her home to recuperate.

Her mother is falling apart and father has become even more distant and bitter than she remembers. She's scared about never dancing again and her future.

Not to worry, she's got childhood friends to keep her mind off things. Rafe, Marigold's one time childhood crush and first unrequited love, is home after serving in the military that has seen action. In fact, Rafe is the only survivor of an attack on his unit. And Isobel his sister was once Marigold's best friend, but grew apart once Marigold's dancing talent became apparent. Isobel shocks everyone by announcing her sudden engagement to some one German and Jewish, which is a big no-no for an upper crust English family. Conrad is quite a shock to Marigold as she has run into him before.

Rafe and Marigold fall in together and start a romance. An engagement occurs, but Rafe demands Marigold give up dancing and settle down in Northumberland. Can She give up the first real love of her life and become a housewife and mother?

There is a large menagerie of characters and lots of sub plots, all neatly tied in together. You expect one thing and the next thing you know, something completely unexpected has happened and you're left wondering what's going to happen next.

If you are looking for a light read, like the cover and title suggest, this isn't it. Be prepared to be shocked by the twists and turns. Predictable this novel is not! You'll either hate it or love it, but it's a good read!
