About the Author

Carol Weston is a writer and speaker. She is the author of For Girls Only, Private and Personal, and Girltalk (Fourth Edition) as well as four Melanie Martin novels for younger readers. She's also the "Dear Carol" advice columnist of Girls' Life. Parenting says "Carol Weston gets girls" and Newsweek calls her a "Teen Dear Abby." Of For Girls Only, USA Today wrote, "There are so many dumb advice books that it's a pleasure to find one that really works." Carol has been a guest on Today, Oprah, The View, and other shows and has spoken at many schools both as an author of novels for elementary school kids as well as an advice giver for middle and high school kids. A Phi Beta Kappa Yale graduate with an M.A. in Spanish, she can give a talk at your school in English or Spanish. She now lives in Manhattan with her husband, daughters, and feisty cat Mike.

More About the Author

Carol Weston writes for kids, teens, and grown-ups and has been the advice columnist at Girls' Life for 15 years. Newsweek calls her a "Teen Dear Abby," and Parenting says, "Carol Weston gets girls." The daughter of writers, Carol went to high school in Armonk (BHHS) and France (SYA). At Yale, she studied comp lit, graduating summa cum laude. In Madrid, Spain, she got an M.A. from Middlebury--and met her husband, playwright Rob Ackerman.

Her first book, GIRLTALK: All the Stuff Your Sister Never Told You (HarperCollins), has been translated into ten languages and in print since 1985. Now in a fully updated fourth edition, it's as sensible, encouraging, and "outstanding" (School Library Journal) as ever.

Carol loves being a guru for girls, but uh oh, she'd always meant to write fiction! Finally she gave herself some advice: Do it! In 2000, Knopf published The Diary of Melanie Martin, a funny novel about a traveling girl and her brother Matt the Brat. (Psst, their art teacher mom doesn't know that the kids' favorite museum game is Point Out the Naked People.)

What else? Carol and Rob live in Manhattan with two daughters and one cat. Her birthday is September 11, and she likes Boggle, Hearts, Bananagrams, skiing, walking, art museums, foreign films, dark chocolate, and good books. She thanks you for ordering her books and invites you to visit carolweston.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Girltalk from someone who really knows, March 14, 2005
By
TR (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Girltalk Fourth Edition: All the Stuff Your Sister Never Told You (Paperback)
I first read Girltalk in middle school and I remember how reassuring so much of Weston's advice was on issues such as body image and relating to boys, and how informative the sections were on how to deal with long-distance friendships or the first whispers floating around school about alcohol and drugs. Now a sophomore in college, I recently paged through the book and was struck by how true (and, in fact, relevant) the advice still was. Girltalk mixes real letters from readers and answers to them, with Weston's own memories, research, and comforting advice, all of which makes this book ideal for girls of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars I WISH I'D HAD THIS BOOK, April 25, 2005
This review is from: Girltalk Fourth Edition: All the Stuff Your Sister Never Told You (Paperback)
This is one of those books that can absolutely change a girl's life. Girltalk can help a girl make smart decisions and feel good about who she is. It covers really complicated subjects in such a friendly comfortable way, that it's just amazing. I'll be giving my daughters copies because both my nieces are huge fans of this book and of the author's advice column in GL magazine.

5.0 out of 5 stars The one book a girl these days MUST have!, August 10, 2004

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Girltalk Fourth Edition: All the Stuff Your Sister Never Told You (Paperback)
This is the real thing...wise, clear, brutally honest and sincere. Carol Weston understand the joys and challenges of growing up female, being in limbo between girlhood and womanhood and being pulled in different directions between the strong voices of peers, parents and the often too quiet voice of true self. This is a book my eleven year old daughter has sunk her teeth into, and it will serve her in a way that no corny "Chicken Soup for the..." will. Growing up isn't always neat and tidy, and sex, divorce, boys, etc. are topics that girls need to think about. Carol Weston can reach them like no other writer I know. Beautifully written, moving and genuine, this book takes hold in a way that a squeamish birds and the bees talk is unable to.Our girls need to know this stuff, and parents, you do too!
