Product Description

The evolution of helmets has resulted in some interesting variations over the years, some of which are more far fetching then others. The Giro Aspect Helmet, however, takes an approach that tones down the aggressive vents, slats, and wings that dominate the peloton into a shape that's at home on the daily commute or enjoying a weekend run up the canyon. For fit, the Aspect uses Giro's Roc Loc Air fit system to offers a secure, comfortable helmet without disrupting ventilation. On the inside of the Aspect, a new Ultrasuede interior with complementing chin padding adds softness to touch points. Also, a removable visor provides protection on sunny rides. Like traditional Giro helmets, a EPS foam and in-mold polycarbonate shell are used to meet consumer protection standards, but injection molded rubber or aluminum side panels add a new level of style to the Aspect. For safety, Giro uses its Roll Cage internal reinforcement to boost structural integrity in the event on an impact. The Giro Aspect Helmet comes in sizes Small through X-large, and three colors; Glowing Red, Matte Bungee Cord, and Matte Black.

Granted, my daughter jokes that my head looks like a mushroom with this on, but I kinda like that look!

I'd rate this 4.5 out of 5, as that gives it a 90%; 80% is too low, and it isn't perfect, either.

I've never busted a helmet, either Bell or Giro, so I can't relate that aspect.

The Giro is nicely understated and has a very unobtrusive visor which is unlike the hard, axe blades wedges on Bells. It is just enough to block the sun near rise or set without creating a big blind spot when you head is down. How it will last is open to conjecture. The visor is part and parcel of the front interior padding, and separate padding replacement without the visor is also provided. I did not see an option to purchase replacement squishy bits like this, so this could be an issue in a couple years as I already see salt stains on the front edge of the brim. I hate investing in a helmet that has any sort of obnoxious, implicit obsolescence.

The hardware is nicely done and the suspension keeps the hard structure off the skull front by design and by material (i.e., the visor material serves as forehead sweat pad and covers the suspension parts going up and over the skull front). This, I'm told, is appreciated by those with thinning hair on top (well, not actually 'as told to', but I can feel the difference). On a Bell you'd get some velcroed pads to stick directly onto the hard structure instead of an actual suspension. However, the overall feel on the Giro's suspension parts is far less robust that what you would find on a Bell helmet. Whether or not this is due to overkill on Bell's part or Goldilocks/just-right design on Giro's is another matter time will tell.

Chin straps and adjustments are as much a black art as with any other helmet. You fiddle around until the fit seems right.

Full disclosure: I rode a bike for years before bike helmets became a common thing, and while I understand the value and importance of wearing one, and I've owned a couple, I'd rarely actually worn them because I found them so uncomfortable. I think this helmet is going to change all that. I love it! It's super-comfy with its soft straps and the little pad near the chin. It's very easy to adjust the fit around your head; you just turn a little dial at the back to tighten or loosen in very small increments*. Once I was out riding, I forgot I had it on.

It's also adorable - more so than you can tell from a picture of just the helmet without a person wearing it. Very jaunty. With the visor on, it reminds me of the caps people wear for (horseback) riding. It seems well ventilated, but it's not hot enough now for me to know. I like it so much I may get another one in a different color. And actually wear it :)

*If you haven't tried a bike helmet in many years, it's worth giving them another look. Many of them now have this type of adjustment system and it's a great improvement.

First, the ventilation is fantastic. I ride in S. Fla, and the temps easily cross over 90 by the end of the morning ride. It is light, unobtrusive, and you can remove the visor (used it 2x's and it was off). The color is bright and noticeable. I was trying to avoid the typical Elf helmets that dominate all the lids in the market.

The only drawback is the back strap pinches the back of my head when I hitch my shoulders up. Instead of riding the straps higher (and there is some adjustment, not enough) it comes together right where there's enough muscle to press and get uncomfortable after a couple of hours. I find myself turning the knob and loosening the back strap.
