I bought a Giro Flume Youth helmet for my 3-year-old son (now almost 5; helmet fit is still comfortable and safe), in the red flame pattern. My husband is a somewhat serious mountain biker, who wanted a very safe helmet for our child; and my son is a very sensitive little guy (he hates crooked sock seams, grit on his skin, hats, etc.). I myself wanted something my little guy thought looked cool but that didn't have superheroes or advertising on it :) This helmet made everybody happy. Of course it is mandatory that our child wear it for biking; but the requirement hasn't been onerous, my son is happy to wear it on his cycle and often leaves it on for fun. The fit is adjustable, and (unlike some other helmets we've seen) is very comfortable even when snug enough to be safe and not to slip around. I highly recommend it and am back to buy a second to have on hand for visiting kids.

Here is a compelling endorsement for a helmet: my 5 year old son went bike riding today with this helmet on. An hour and a half after he finished riding, and was playing calmly in the yard with toy cars and trucks, he still had his helmet on. I don't know if he forgot he had it on, or just liked having it on. Either way, same point: this thing is comfortable! (And it wasn't that he liked the novelty of it; he's used it average 5-7x / week for the last year and half since we got it).

I think that's the most important thing I can tell you about the Flume, because you already know this helmet is safe, as it is made by Giro, meets all the safety requirements, and has not had any recalls or problems. Which only leaves one main point regarding safety (which at least one other reviewer made too) -- any helmet is only going to work if the kid is willing to wear it, wear it fitted properly, and wear it the whole time!

In my experience it is very easy to adjust the Flume to an excellent fit. The fit is snug, secure, level, and comfortable, and it stays that way throughout long, vigorous rides -- no shifting on the head, loosening up, or creeping off level, and no digging in or unequal pressure at any points on the head.

The helmet is durable. After average 5-7 uses per week over 1.5 years, the headband is still fully attached to the foam at the attachment points; the chin-strap clip still works like new; the rear dial still works like new; no other deterioration.

Other than that, the helmet is light, nicely shaped and balanced, and looks cool. All around winner.

One minor negative point: the dial in the rear is slightly difficult to use when the helmet is on the child's head; it sits up against the back of the head in a flattish way that makes it a little difficult to turn without pinching the hair on the back of the neck. But it is very easy to take the helmet off, turn the dial, and put the helmet back on. This drawback is so minor that it should not deter anyone from buying this helmet! You don't need to use the dial often anyway, because over time it stays where you set it -- it doesn't creep looser. I put this point here more in case anyone from Giro reads these reviews and they might be able to tweak the design a bit. Also I make this observation after having previously used the Giro Me2, on which the rear dial is very easy to adjust while the helmet is on the child's head without pinching the hair, so I might be a little spoiled. And this flatter dial on the Flume may be more comfortable for the child during normal use than the chunkier dial of the Me2, anyway, I don't know.

If your child's head is in the right size range for this helmet, you can stop comparing choices now -- buy the Flume!

I bought this helmet for my almost 2 year old son because he had grown out of his smaller helmet (the Specialized "Small Fry" which we also loved) even though the measurements said he should still be fitting it. This Giro fits perfectly, it has a nice adjustment feature that is very easy to use and he has plenty of room to grow! Before I bought it I did some research on different brands and this one had the widest range for head measurements so I'm hoping it will fit him longer. It looks awesome on him and he loves wearing it, and often doesn't want to take it off!

This is such an easy to fit helmet. it is light weight, and meets all safty requirments. My whole family is now in a giro bike helmet. Our favorite fit, and can easly change the size when the temps get a little chilly and we add a thin hat under. :) best of all it doesn't slide back off the kids head! Staying put keeps them happy, and NO complaints!

My daughter absolutely loves her lightweight helmet that keeps her safe too! She's fallen off her bike several times and the helmet held up wonderfully. No boo boo's here....

Loved it, but had to return it since my son needs a larger size. He is 12 & needs adult helmet.

We bought this for our 5 year old for christmas. (He has a big mellon ....head lol) It fit perfectly. It came with inserts so that if the helmet was too big the inserts could be added for a perfect fit. Our son loves the helmet and the flames look GREAT! He thinks he's a big time bike rider now. He also wears this helmet to ride his skateboard, his rollerskates, his rollerblades and to walk on his stilts. I have a Giro helmet that I wear when I bike ride and I find this brand to be very durable and comfortable. I feel confident that my son's head (and mine) is protected in this helmet. Besides, it looks REALLY cool. :)

My 4 year-old recently outgrew his other bike helmet. so we needed to get a new one. His head was measuring at 53cm, which for his age means he has a heck of a noggin.

Too many of the kid helmets are gimmicky, or cheap, sometimes both. This on is not, they look like a younger, smaller adult helmet. The designs of course are louder than my helmet, or my wife's but that's fine for my son.

The dial fit was easy, and the strap adjustments were simple.

It fit very well, and i feel confident he will be safe with it on.

The price, design and fit are worth the $. Helmets only work if they are worn, so I needed one that he would put on without an issue.

Well done Giro!

I bought 2 helmets for my grandson's in Florida. I relied upon customer reviews and my daughter told me I did a great job. The helmets fit nicely and they are just what the boys wanted. Having the helmet shipped directly to Florida and arriving at their door in 2 days is awesome.

My daughter age 2 1/2 who hates all helmets put this one and didn't want to take it off. It is so light that it feels weightless and at the same time keeps our child safe. I would highly recommend this helmet if you want a happy toddler who enjoys wearing it.
