Book Description

Europe is full of dark memories. Giselle's love is forbidden; her chance to be a mother destroyed. She flees to America where she becomes the haute couture fashion designer, to the wealthy, high-society Grand Dames of New York. After all, she had been mentored in Paris by the legendary Charles Worth himself.

Giselle's past remains cloaked in shadows, increasing her allure. Her heart is engaged by a man who comes to her only in secrecy, drawing her back to her mysterious past. When her brother dies and his wife abandons their child, she takes on the care of her infant nephew, Gastien, who is his grandfather's namesake.

As young Gastien becomes a teenager, he finds himself undergoing a fiery trial as he struggles with his own identity - an identity that could cost him everything. Every man deserves the right to be true to his own character and needs, but America in the 1940's could penalize him severely for simply being who he is.

Follow Gastien's tormented angst as he battles with himself to make a decision - whether to risk losing his fledgling art career, his friends, and possibly his life; or to deny his true self and struggle to find happiness while living a lie.

This historical fiction novel is book 4 of a 5 book drama/family saga for adults (The Gastien Series). As such, it contains adult themes and graphic scenes. Each book can stand on its own, but is most compelling read in order.

Historic people, places, events, and things mentioned in this book: France, Paris, House of Worth, Milan, Italy, Albergo di Milano, Grand Hotel et de Milan, Gieseppe Verdi, Capri, Locanda Pagano, Le Palma, New York City, Fifth Avenue Hotel, Central Park, Garment District, The Dakota, Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, World War 1, Great Depression, Empire State Building, Lindbergh kidnapping, World War II, Peter Luger's Steakhouse.

Editorial Reviews

"...It grabbed hold of me and I couldn't put it down...Caddy Rowland is a talented Author that has done everything except disappoint with this Series." -Crystal Trent Dodson, crystaltrentdotsonreviews

"...I have read all of the books in Gastien's series and I have loved each and every one of them. Caddy Rowland definitely didn't disappoint with this one either!" Christina Baker Irelan, Intoxicated by Books

From the Author

The Gastien Series is complete and includes the following titles:
Gastien: The Cost of the Dream (Book 1)
Gastien: From Dream to Destiny (Book 2)
Tristan Michel: Bloodline of Passion (Book 3)
Giselle: Keeper of the Flame (Book 4)
Gastien: Circle of Destiny (Book 5)

The Gastien Series is many things: historical fiction, drama, family saga, psychological novel. Some are also coming of age and love stories. The last books include gay coming of age and gay romance. Just like any family, there are many stories to tell.

It is dark, sad, upsetting, heartwarming, funny and always thought-provoking. There are a few blatantly cruel scenes and some extremely tender ones. The series tackles social issues such as class struggle, homelessness, the quest for power, bigotry, family secrets, and shows how one man's choices effect others for generations to come.

Be prepared for an extremely emotional read. Yes, at times the characters will upset you. You will love, hate, pity, respect, disrespect and cheer for them. Just like in any family, no one is perfect. Their personality warts are fully displayed. You will grow to feel like a part of the Beauchamps, and when the series is over the characters will stay alive in your mind for weeks.

Come along and join the family. Let them tell you their story. I think you will find the ride unlike any you've taken before.

*This series is meant for adults. As such, it contains adult scenes and themes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the previous books in the series August 2, 2013

Well, this series finally took a tumble for me with this book. The first half or three quarters of the book was good and held my interest; but when Gastian could not decide whether or not he was homosexual......that was when the book became boring and draggy and I began skimming the page instead of reading. It really dissapointed me when the author began to drag this part of the book out - I thought it would never end and then the ending was so abrupt without an answer to the agonizing question. I suppose we'll find the answer in the last book. I hope it is not a repeaat of this one as far as stretching the story to the breaking point.

Caddy Rowland grew up with a stack of books that almost reached the ceiling before she was five. Books, along with her vivid imagination, have always been some of her closest friends.

She lives with her husband, who was her high school sweetheart. They are owned by two parrots. Besides being a writer, she is an artist. One can often find her "makin' love to the color" (painting) with loud music blaring.

Her goal as an author is to make readers laugh, cry, think, and become intimately connected with her main characters. She writes dramatic novels showcasing the sublime joy and bitter tragedy of being human. Most all of her work is LGBT inclusive. In other words, she strives to make her work reflect humanity as it really is: varied and interesting.
