Forty years of collecting kernels, October 4, 2008
This review is from: Gists, Orts, Shards: A Commonplace Book (Paperback)
Greene has followed Benjamin Franklin's advice for 40 years "I would advise you to read with a pen in your hand, and enter in a little book short hints of what you find that is curious ..." and what a curious and useful assortment this is! These kernels, have a uniquely Kentuckian air, including Mother Ann Lee (founder of Shakers) "Do your work as though you had a thousand years to live, and if you were to die tomorrow", Thomas A. Clark, and Thomas Merton ("But let us be convinced of the fact that we will never be anything else but beginners, all our life.").
Along the way are a few from "J.G": (the author), Kierkegaard ("The purity of the heart is to will one thing"), and Kafka ("In your struggles with the world, bet on the world)'. Musing of and about Jazz musicians and poets are included. As I birder, my favorite from Zen master Suzuki "I don't know anything about consciousness, I just try to teach my students how to hear the birds sing."
