You need tou buy it!!!! it's a treasure!!!!I am proud to be Mexican!! i can not wait for the duetto disc, between Rolando and Netrebko!!!! long time wait,

It's been a while since I got Rolando's CD and I've been waiting for the DVD version of the making. Zarzuela develops a new, refreshing, young and powerful meaning in Villazon's voice. Just need to hear " Un gitano sin su honor" and imagine the loneliness, deception, and heartbreaking pain. Someday Mexico will give Rolando the honor place other countries have given him as one of the finest and talented opera performers. !Viva Rolando!

Spanish Splendour,
This review is from: Gitano [CD + DVD] (Audio CD)
I first fell in love with zarzuela over 20 years ago through the wonderful recordings of Plácido Domingo and José Carreras. Adding Rolando Villazón's fresh and vibrant recording to my collection has been an absolute joy.Plácido Domingo's conducting is sensitive and insightful, evidence of his intimate knowledge of this particular art form. Rolando Villazón is absolutely in his element - pouring out his heart in golden-voiced splendour - and obviously revelling in this special collaboration with Maestro Domingo. As is often the case with Mr Villazón's albums, well known pieces (such as "No Puede Ser" and "Bella Enamorada") sit beside lesser known works - giving the listener a chance to revisit loved and familiar melodies while broadening the horizons to take in something new. I particularly enjoy his rendition of "Ya Mis Horas Felices" - a heartfelt and intensely personal declaration of love and fidelity from husband to wife, which he infuses with an almost defiant passion, as if to say: "Let no one come between us!" By contrast, just listen to "Un Gitano Sin Su Honor" and you cannot help but be touched by its heartbroken despair. I cannot listen to it with dry eyes. I did not know this aria - but once I read the lyrics and found the story of this zarzuela online, I understood why it affected me as it did. Then, when I viewed the bonus DVD of the recording sessions, there was Mr Domingo with tears in his eyes as he listened to the playback of this particular track. What a fine tribute to Mr Villazón's outstanding interpretation - and to Mr Domingo's sheer love of the music. He must have heard it and sung it himself many times - yet still it visibly moves him. I really recommend buying the deluxe version of this product with CD and bonus DVD. The film is an excellent window into the working environment of these two wonderful artists and adds extra dimension to the overall musical experience. |
