5.0 out of 5 stars Lester Bowie conducts, June 11, 2008
By

This review is from: Gittin to Know Y'all (Audio CD)
This 1969 album features a 50 piece orchestra, with the title track (parts I & II) composed and conducted by trumpeter Lester Bowie. Recorded in Baden-Baden, Germany, the album has an all-star cast (including John Surman, Kenny Wheeler, Roscoe Mitchell, Willem Breuker, Barre Phillips, Tony Oxley, Albert Mangelsdorff, Terje Rypdal, and many others you will know). Sponsored by Südwestfunk radio and organized by Joachim Ernst Berendt, this album documents the first significant meeting point between European free jazz and Chicago's AACM. A real must-own for any fan of the avant-garde. Highly Recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Free jazz masterpiece, November 3, 2008

This review is from: Gittin to Know Y'all (Audio CD)
This cd is absolutely riveting from start to finish. An attempt to get the free thinkers of jazz from both continents together for a one shot project. Imagine getting the avant free jazzers from US (mainly from Chicago) and their equivalent from europe together for a series of projects involving large groups and smaller ones (even duos) for a series of planned recordings. John Surman, Karin Krog, Alan Skidmore, Joseph Jarman, Lester Bowie, Terje Rypdal, Albert Mangelsdorff, Tony Oxley, Palle Daniellsson, Gerd Dudek and Willem Breuker are just a few of the many involved. Great and super recommended to searchers of adventurous music.
