Quality 80's rock,
By Mike (Iowa, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Giuffria (Audio CD)
Having once again heard the song 'Call to the Heart' on an internet radio station, I had to get this CD. Have the remnants of the cassette which was played so much it was worn out. One of the greatest bands from the 80's, too bad they didnt continue to put out music as a group. This is some of the best 80's rock ever. Really pumps you up and puts you in a great mood, like most of the 80's bands. FYI-- I picked up a copy of Silk and Steel on CD at a Target store, out of the blue one day. Never would have thought I would find it there. I prefer this disc. Would consider selling the copy of Silk and Steel.

STILL DOES ME RIGHT.....CALLS TO MY HEART!,
By Kevin Dobbs "dragonboots" (Perth Western Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Giuffria (Audio CD)
Simply hands down the best pomp rock CD ever. This CD is without doubt one of my desert island discs. Ok, so where to start, lets see....do you love keyboards set to stun? Well you get them here in abundance. Do you love well crafted songs with hooks so strong they never leave you? Well you get that too! Do you like your vocalists to have a little more originality than the latest Robert Plant wannabe? Well you get one here too! This lp never left my stereo when I first bought it in 1984 and it is 2000 now (jeez) and now on crystal clear CD it still spins with regularity. Stand outs? Well Greg's hair on the back cover for a start..(the man is a God)... though seriously song wise try these, the single "Call to The Heart" which is perfectly crafted AOR suitable for radio though not lacking in originality. The magical "Line Of Fire" with its swirling intro, and the room spinning "Out of The Blue" which is the best thing to which Greg Giuffria put a keyboard since Angel. Dont let it go out of print again before you think of buying this one. It took me nearly twenty years to find this on CD! Now..... has anyone found Silk and Steel yet?

Stunning album,
By Quiet Explorer "tgaither2" (Chapel Hill, NC United States) - See all my reviews

This album is simply stunning. The first time I heard it in the late 80s, I couldn't believe my ears. Giuffria sets the keyboard on fire, and the rest of the band fills in with melodic energy. These guys were way ahead of their time. Although they're (unfairly) lumped in with the rest of the 80s hair metal bands, they actually really had something to offer. The music is majestic, bombastic and haunting. Not a bad track on the entire album.

Classic melodic rock album,
By

After the demise of the highly influential (and criminally underrated) band Angel, keyboardist extraordinaire Greg Giuffria launched one of the 80's absolute finest melodic rock bands, appropriately named Giuffria. He was joined by powerhouse vocalist David Glen Eisley as well former Quiet Riot bassist Chuck Wright and guitarist Craig Goldy.
Giuffria debuted in 1984 with a self-titled album that is for all intents and purposes the perfect snapshot of the era. It combined the arena rocking sound of bands like Journey and Foreigner with the harder-edged style of the emerging Hollywood hair metal scene. The result was a keyboard-heavy (naturally) melodic rock sound with catchy guitar hooks and David Glen Eisley's "silk and steel" vocals. It featured hit singles in the moving Call to Your Heart and Lonely in Love, but just about every song on the album is just as memorable. Giuffria's keyboards set the tone right at the start with the majestic intro to Do Me Right, and really it's all uphill from there until the very end, when the throwaway introductory track The Awakening and the way too mellow Out of the Blue (Too Far Gone) rob the album of its momentum. Giuffria would go on to release one more album (1986's Silk and Steel) before evolving into House of Lords. If you're any kind of 80's rock/AOR/melodic rock fan, the Giuffria albums are must-have releases. NOTE: Axe Killer's 1999 reissue of this album features digitally remastered sound that totally breathes new life into this classic album. The remastered audio makes this reissue well worth hunting down, and it's probably going to be easier to find than the original CD release. PS - There's also a box set that collects the Axe Killer reissues of Giuffria and Silk and Steel. That's going to be your best value if you don't have either album.

Good Rock And Roll Band Here,

I have liked Guiffria since they first came out in 1984 with this album. Unfortunately they only put out two or three albums and disappeared. In the mid 1980's when rock music was going to pot, Guiffria came through with some good old hard rock to keep the trend going. Bordering on hard rock and metal, this album was superb back then and it is just as fresh today as it was then. With the garbage they call music today, we need more bands like Guiffria and more hard rocking albums like this self-titled album. If you like good rock and roll, and hard rock at that, this is the album to have in your collection.

Rock with style,
By WIlliam Knox (Dallas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Giuffria (Audio CD)
Not very often does one use the term class with a hard rock band, but in this case it works. Basically this is Great White with integrity. These are relationship songs that have substance ranging from "Call to your heart" where the singer realizes that he and his lady are one to "Do me right" which is self-explanatory. Don't get me wrong--they do rock, but you won't catch yourself banging your head.

Somewhat uninspired,

The favorable reviews of this CD were just too kind. Greg Giuffria is of course a first-class keyboard player. But his instrumental skills don't compensate for the more serious drawbacks on this CD. The songwriting is rather uninspired, with few interesting melodic ideas. Further, the gravel-laden vocals don't fit well with this musical style. Greg Giuffria has played with several other bands, so listeners who enjoy his keyboard work would be better advised to buy the either first two Angel albums, or the first few albums by House of Lords. These were both more melodic and more progressive.
