Book Description

May 1998 0877141916 978-0877141914
The book can either stand alone or serve as a companion to Ms. Wolff's half-hour video documentary by the same name. The songbook is the first to bring together the lyrics and music of 27 representative songs of the American women's suffrage Movement. Spanning the period from 1848-1920, these songs range in style from parlor music to ragtime. Each song is accompanied by historical background notes and the text is extensively illustrated with full-color sheet music covers, cartoons, photographs and other historical graphic representations. The book, representing over 5 years of research by the author, traces popular American music and the women's suffrage movement as revealed through song.

Editorial Reviews

Review

". . . This book, the first to bring together the lyrics and music of these songs, reproduces many of the sheet music covers as well, conveying valuable information in the imagery used to accompany the music. Each song is carefully documented and discussed. The video documentary has solid (if not inspired) production values and tells a fascinating story, complete with some good performances of these songs. The combined package would make a fantastic teaching tool and deserves wide distribution and recognition." Dirty Linen: The Magazine of Folk and World Music." #82 June/July 1999.

"Francie Wolff has filled in a big hole in the history of American popular song -- a hole left inexplicably by all writers on American music. Her book is put together in an original and highly effective way . . . Her writing style is direct and convincing . . . with its integration of text, illustrations, and the songs themselves. She has done us all a big favor by telling thi! s tale, and telling it so well." Charles Hamm, author of "Yesterdays: Popular Song in America" and "Music in the New World." - independent commentary. -- Reviews are yet to come.... in "Sing Out" and "The Sonneck Society Bulletin" and more

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment. This book provides a lively connection to the suffrage movement. Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars A long-awaited resource for women's studies, July 27, 2001
This review is from: Give the Ballot to the Mothers: Songs of the Suffragists - A History in Song (Paperback)
I can't recommend this book highly enough! It's the first to publish songs AND their music together under one cover, and also includes color reproductions for some of the original sheet music covers. As if that weren't enough, there are also excellent historical notes for each song, and it has a spiral binding to make it easy to use as a songbook.
