Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

Every year hundreds of thousands of people adopt feral mustangs and other untrained horses as well as rescue previously abused animals. Give a Horse a Second Chance helps the reader decide which “gift horses” are within their ability to help and then describes how to go about giving the animal a happy, healthy, and useful environment and life.
The author, a longtime expert dealing with rescue horses, offers practical and sympathetic information on such subjects as:

• Why adopt a horse?: the pros and cons of adoption
• Adoption process: where to look and how to adopt
• Choosing a horse: breeds and types, conformation, age, temperament
• Homecoming: introducing the horse to its new home
• Veterinary considerations: including conformation and soundness issues
• Caring for an equine senior citizen: care and exercise for the older animal
• Training: replacing bad habits with good ones
• Selling or donating the horse: if you can no longer look after the animal

With an appendix by natural horsemanship trainer Dan Bowman and a list of equine adoption agencies, Give a Horse a Second Chance is a comprehensive and compassionate guide to this timely subject.

From the Back Cover

Why Adopt a Horse? Rescue horses deserve a second chance, and horse lovers have the satisfaction of knowing they can save a horse’s life by providing a good home. There is also a wide selection of horses to choose from. Just about every breed of equines is available for adoption at different rescue facilities, from tiny Shetland ponies to massive Belgian work horses.

Many equine athletes are ready and waiting to begin second careers. Retired thoroughbred racehorses have been successfully retrained for second careers as show horses. Standardbred harness-racing horses have been retrained and shown successfully in everything from dressage classes to team-penning. Retired show horses often have second careers as family horses, and they make excellent companions for novice adults and children.

More About the Author

I have been training and caring for horses for over 30 years. During that time, I have brought home several horses with health and safety issues. Unfortunately,my past experiences are not unique.

Many horsepeople bring home project ponies from the wrong side of the tracks, including the fast track to the slaughterhouse.

With the help of an equine vet and a professional horse trainer, I have done my best to compile
useful information on dealing with health and training issues in the pages of my book, "Give a Horse a Second Chance - Adopting and Caring for Rescue Horses."

I have also included information on how to adopt a horse from a rescue facility.

All kinds of horses are available for adoption from rescue facilities- thoroughbreds, standardbreds, quarter horses, and mustangs.

Horse rescue organizations must be supported, and I intend to use a portion of this website to promote and support their activities.

Thousands of horses went to slaughter last year. No one wants to see these wonderful animals suffer through that process.

Horse rescue workers are breaking their backs, hearts, and their bank accounts trying to save these animals. They deserve your help.

This book is a fantastic read for those interested in the practical side of rescuing horses. It describes the various conditions rescued horses may be suffering from and how to recognize them. I highly recommend this book to anyone who might even consider starting a horse rescue or rescuing a horse from a bad situation.

I found this book extremely informative and an enjoyable read. The author obviously writes from experience and with a desire to encourage responsible horse ownership. She offers helpful advice for first horse owners and outlines the issues involved when taking on a horse in distress. For those of us with soft hearts and a lack of good sense, when it comes to an animal is trouble, this is a handy and humorous guide that will help us do the most good where it is desprately needed.

This review is from: Give a Horse a Second Chance: Adopting and Caring for Rescue Horses (Hardcover)
This book complies basic information and is layed out well and a good starter book.. One thing I was disappointed is that it didn't really outline how to start up a Horse rescue but then again it didn't state that it did- A overall nice book !
