Garnett Silk -real name Garnett Smith- was born in 1970. As a teeneager he started deejaying, calling himself Little Bimbo. For Delroy Collins he recorded his first singles, soon followed by sessions for King Tubby, Youth Promotion and King Jammy. He achieved initial success with his cuts for Courtney Cole, but after reggae connoisseurs recognized him as a major talent Garnett Silk definitely bursted on the scene in 1992 with his exciting debut album <i>It's Growing</i> for Bobby 'Digital' Dixon. This album established him as a major roots artist. Until his untimely death at the end of 1994 when he tried to save his mother from a burning house, he cut excellent slices for an array of producers such as Steely and Clevie, Jack Scorpio and Donovan Germain.
<i>Give I Strength</i> brings together 16 fantastic tracks he recorded for producer Bobby Digital. Most of these tracks are well known highlights drawn from Garnett's repertoire, which he recorded for Bobby Digital and listening to these songs years later it's clear that Garnett was a unique musical talent, vocally blessed with a tenor, flavored with that brilliant Horace Andy vibrato. The Bobby Digital production is as brilliant as you would expect, and he has put complete new backing tracks on a lot of the tracks found here, laid down by household names such as Dean Fraser, Danny Brownie, G. Miller and Benji Meyers.
This is essential Garnett Silk stuff and if compilations are supposed to be a selection of the best songs from one artist then <i>Give I Strength</i> has to be classic example in the genre.
