Great Rock n Roll is Back!,

This review is from: Give Me the Fear (Audio CD)
After an almost fifteen year absence of rock music in the mainstream it looks like rock music is making a triumphant return. If bands like the Tokyo Dragons are any indication, the days of grunge and rap as mainstream staples are not long for this world. The excellent reception of the Tokyo Dragon's music in the UK seems to support the prediction that they and bands like "the Darkness" are on the vangard of this revolution. As a veteran of the Golden Age of Rock, you know, the late 60's and the 1970's, I can safely say that I haven't been so excited by new music since I was in my early twenties sometime in the very early 1980's! It's been well over a decade since I drooled over getting a new "record" in my hands. I feel like a teenager again and these guys, the Tokyo Dragons' are the ones that did this to me. God Bless 'em! They are no less than a mix of Motorhead and AC/DC. No compromises. No let-downs. Each song rocks and has the energy that rock and roll is supposed to have. No angst either phoney or real here. No dark lyrics. No assinine evil costumes. No done to death dark music. No grunge here. Not a single rap lyric anywhere. But why should there be? This is REAL F'KN ROCK & ROLL!

It's getting better each day for we lovers of what the word Rock really stands for. After a decade of mumbling or screaming singers and so-called guitarists who took pride in being unable to play their instruments, we now have great bands like Tokyo Dragons coming to re-kindle our love of music and to save us from having to desperately trawl through obscure '60's and '70's lost bands; hoping to find a lost gem of real rock we haven't heard or have in our collections.
Tokyo Dragons, you are our salvation! Keep it coming!

I'm always surprised at how many great rock n' roll bands are out there, just under the surface (a.k.a. mainstream rock radio). Apparently not all modern rock bands sound like Nickelback. Tokyo Dragons are a great example. The UK band comes from the Wildhearts/Almighty school of British hard rock, taking old school influences and giving them a modern edge.
2005's Give Me The Fear is the band's debut album, and man does it rock. It's a party rock album, pure and simple. The kind that makes you want to drink and dance and maybe start a fight at the local bar. You hear plenty of KISS, Motorhead, AC/DC and even the Ramones in Tokyo Dragons' songs. It's all living fast, dying young and partying the whole way. Catchy melodies, shout-along choruses, and a great feel-good rock n' roll vibe make Give Me The Fear a totally rockin' party of an album. If you miss the kind of rock that they used to make in the 70s and 80s, give this album a spin. You'll also want to check out bands like Airbourne, Endeverafter, Hardcore Superstar, American Heartbreak and Charm City Devils. It turns out bands do still rock like they used to!

Loud? Check.
Aggressive? Check. Killer guitar work? Check. Good songwriting? Check. Lack of tender, heartfelt ballads? Check. Sounds like we've got a hard rock album, folks! And Give Me the Fear is a pretty good album, if you're looking for no frills, riff driven hard rock, and the Tokyo Dragons deliver just that. You won't find a great deal of innovative material here, but I doubt that's what you're looking for. If you wanna rock, then this'll do.

Yessireebob they sure do, T-Drags get it going with GIVE ME THE FEAR, and album that shines with groovy, psychadelic tones. I have not heard a band this good since I used to put on the old BTO vinyls I had years ago. Seriously, they are worth checking out so do not delay and go git sum!!

Rock 'n' Roll,

These boys have no new story or words of wisdom to impart, they just have a very, very engaging way of telling you the same story again. Like a friend who has told you all his best stories but you don't mind listening to them again.
This is a band that have accrued some serious column inches in the UK, particularly Classic Rock who featured the track Rockin the Stew on one of their front cover freebie discs. On the strength of that track I added this little gem to my collection and; The opening salvos of What the Hell and Get 'em Off. Listen to these tracks as they tell you exactly where this bunch of guys are coming from. Their entire hard drinkin, hard lovin manifesto stripped bare. To help the newcomer to this band some comparisons would be to; Tesla - quite a drunk Tesla rippin' through their tracks Modern Day Cowboy and Hang Tough. Skid Row - especially the track Midnight from their debut album. Or maybe even; D.A.D - Sleeping My Day Away Tamas Szekeres - Fire It's juvenile to say but slapping this disc into your car stereo will add 10k's speed to your vehicle, such is the affect of this album on the foot! To finish, the production is fine, the playing not virtuoso but it suits perfectly the music being played and the boys sound like they walk it like they talk it. Tokyo Dragons should easily find themselves a niche if the don't explode into a million pieces after one party too many. This album represents a good 40 minutes of good times with nary a let up. Well worth buying. |
