Editorial Reviews

Not so long ago, a young band from the swedish town of borl„nge came along and conquered the world of rock'n'roll in a surprise coup. Early 2004 saw the arrival of "bring 'em in", the furious debut by these exceptionally gifted, if somewhat big-mouthed songwriters. And then things happened in quick succession. A new album every year and countless concerts in increasingly large venues. Their albums, "hurricane bar" and "ode to ochrasy" effortlessly made gold in germany, and their most recent release, "never seen the light of day", which had them experiment with scandinavian folk music, among other directions, surprised fans and critics alike. Mando diao have long hit the big time, that much is for certain, and it's just as certain that their new album "give me fire" will continue to increase their standing even further. No song is like the other, yet all of them are typical mando diao. And "typical" is synonymous with great when it comes to this band. The first single "dance with somebody" is already a top 5 smash in 5 countries. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Give Me (Music On) Fire!, March 30, 2009
The five guys from Borlänge have done it again!
This album has everything a Mando-Freak is looking for when we listen to an album by our favourite band. There are songs to dance to, songs to sing along to and of course songs to listen to while brainstorming on your bed. This album both begins and ends with strong songs with cool lyrics. If you're looking for an album that you always can listen to, if it's because you're sad, happy, angry or having a party: Then you can stop lokking because what you need is Give Me Fire!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mando Diao gives me fire!, March 30, 2009

(REAL NAME)
There is no doubt that Mando Diao is one of the most fiery indie rock bands out today... I know, I've met the guys a couple times. These five Swedish lads care greatly for music and their fifth studio album highlights their passion.

"Blue Lining White Trenchcoat" is pure rock and roll and was the perfect choice to begin this album. That said, the next three tracks are the true auditory diamonds on the cd. "Dance With Somebody" should really be played on the radio here in the States, because it's just THAT SONG that everyone would love. It's a great song and it really makes you WANT TO DANCE. The end of the track features a live cut from a special show at the Troubadour in 2008, at which this song and "Gloria" were first performed live. There's something really special about "Gloria" - and singer Bjorn's voice really shines through with emotion. There's a roughness that really complements the music.

And then there's my absolute favorite track on the album... an unlikely song, actually. "High Heels" stands out on the album for its style... which seems perfect for an old-school cabaret... you can just see Dita Von Teese dancing to it. It's really brilliant and Gustaf has outdone himself with the vocals on this track. I can't listen to it just once.

I must admit that when I listen to "Mean Street" I can't help but think of Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life" or The Jam's "Beat Surrender" - and that's not really a bad thing. It's a nice song with a good vibe to it, though it's definitely not one of the best on the album.

"Maybe Just Sad" is the next track, and is also one of my favorites. I think the political lyrical content makes it a contender for the best song on the album... and again, I'm a sucker for Bjorn's voice.

"A Decent Life" like Never Seen The Light Of Day's "Dalarna" is a great instrumental... and it leads in to the title track "Give Me Fire." It's another one of those great, fiery rock and roll tracks that these guys are so good at writing. Gustaf has a passion in his voice that's worth mentioning.

There's a great sweetness in "Crystal" that's really beautiful. It's probably the most subtle song on the album and has a lovely hint of the past... I can't put my finger on it, but there's just that nostalgic feel to this song, it's just perfect.

"Come On Come On" has definitely won the prize for oddest lyrics on the album... they're very good at writing jarring lyrics... but even though they are a little bizarre it doesn't seem to take away from the poetry of the song. "I was a part of licking tears from you" is equally odd as it is beautiful and poetic. I guess that's a good way to describe these guys... odd/beautiful/poetic.

I've got to say, of the thousands of musicians and bands I've listened to Mando Diao is one of the best when it comes to writing the intros to songs. The first 30 seconds of "Go Out Tonight" are the perfect way to begin a song for me... I don't know why... but I love that intro.

I feel like "You Got Nothing On Me" is going to become one of the staples to their live act. You feel this energy on the cd, but I just cannot wait to see it live, with the energy of the crowd pumping them up further. I didn't love it immediately, but it's one of those songs that gets better and better each time you listen.

The last song on the album is "The Shining," which seems to really highlight a Latin influence on the band. It's got a big band sound and is a great, danceable song. There's a hidden track which probably serves best to show how fun this band is... you get to hear the guys singing in Spanish - which the guys seem to be really good at. It's an adorable addition to the song and it's a great way to end the album.

And beyond the music, the album as a whole is perfect. The package design for it is absolutely gorgeous - and is my favorite design of the 5 albums they've put out. The Special Edition digipack is stunning... and had I not already been in love with this band, I feel like if I saw it in a music store I'd HAVE to buy it because the design draws me to it. The DVD that comes with the Special Edition really gives you great insight to the writing and recording process and you get a sneak peek at the proposed concert DVD said to be released this summer, that was recorded at The Troubadour in Los Angeles.

This is a great album and I hope you can get your hands on a copy... it's completely worth it. Let's bring Mando Diao to the masses in The States, yeah?
