More About the Author

Eric Foner is DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University, where he earned his B.A. and Ph.D. In his teaching and scholarship, Foner focuses on the Civil War and Reconstruction, slavery, and nineteenth-century America. His "Reconstruction: America's Unfinished Revolution, 1863-1877," won the Bancroft, Parkman, and Los Angeles Times Book prizes and remains the standard history of the period. In 2006 Foner received the Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching at Columbia University. He has served as president of the Organization of American Historians, the American Historical Association, and the Society of American Historians. He is currently writing a book on Lincoln and slavery.

This text is indeed used for college history classes and is usually assigned in US survey classes that cover the colonial period to the present day. The amount and depth of material in the text is quite exceptional. The book includes chapter review pages, suggested readings and documents and tables. It also includes a generous amount of primary source documents, drawings and photographs, color maps and graphs. It is beautifully written and illustrated. It is expensive, but this is the case for all large survey texts and college lab books.

It is troubling to me that an individual would "review" a book they have never read and would disparage college professors for assigning the appropriate text for a class. Clearly, this individual does not understand the distinction between college texts and popular history books.

I bought the wrong book, but my friend needed it so I sold it to him to break even. Supposedly a good book, but if its for class it does not matter whether it is good or bad.

I bought this for a US history class that required I buy 3 different books (all included in this one-volume-edition) I saved hundreds because there is a new edition. I could not notice a difference, it was never an issue. My thought was that if it ever became an issue I was only out a few dollars... Food for thought, the textbook industry is a sham.
